(meaningful news<\/a>) – Law enforcement is responding to a report of an active shooter and a vehicle break-in at the Temple Israel Synagogue and School, located in West Bloomfield Township.<\/p>\n

The shooting was reported Thursday afternoon and video showed black smoke rising from the building, which is about 25 miles northwest of Detroit.<\/p>\n

By 2 p.m., an AP source said the suspect in the attack had died.<\/p>\n

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the building was evacuated. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents were at the scene.<\/p>\n

“FBI personnel are on scene with partners in Michigan responding to an apparent vehicle collision and active shooter situation outside the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township,” Patel said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The incident prompted local schools to go into “safe mode” and local law enforcement agencies are urging residents to avoid the area while the situation remains active.<\/p>\n

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she is following the reports.<\/p>\n

“This is heartbreaking,” Whitmer said in a statement. “Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live in peace and practice their faith. Anti-Semitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am looking forward to everyone’s safety.”<\/p>\n

The attack comes amid a widespread increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the US and globally. Jewish institutions, including synagogues and schools, have increasingly tightened security measures in recent months. America is also on high alert regarding attacks amid the ongoing conflict against Iran.<\/p>\n

The attack is reminiscent of a September 2025 attack on a Michigan church, in which a gunman drove a vehicle into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Grand Blanc Township, opened fire and set fire to the structure. Five people, including the gunman, were killed and many were injured in the attack.<\/p>\n

The FBI and local law enforcement continue to investigate the scene at Temple Israel, and residents are urged to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
