Criminals have been using telephones to defraud people since the dawn of time, and the advent of smartphones has further increased this risk. Although likely leaving a lot of us vulnerable, the technology also offers companies like Google new ways to fight scammers. We saw Google bring some new in-call protections to financial apps in the US late last year, and now we’re checking out what might be next.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOne of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of scammers is the ability to spoof the number they are calling from, making it appear as if they are someone legitimate. And despite the rise of systems like STIR\/SHAKEN to resist spoofing (originally deployed as a response to robocallers), people are still being duped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAn in-development “verified caller” system in Android could help make this type of fraud even more difficult. Unlike the existing verified calls system, which was a feature of the Google Phone app, it will be deployed on Android at the system level through Play Services \u2013 hopefully encouraging wider use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
