You spend a lot of time using the software keyboard on your phone, so it’s wise to make sure it’s a keyboard you’re comfortable with \u2013 one that suits both your aesthetic tastes and your typing needs.<\/p>\n
I’ve previously covered the best alternative keyboards if you want a change from the default keyboard that comes with your phone, but if you own a Samsung Galaxy, there’s another option to be aware of: you can also create your own keyboard.<\/p>\n
This comes via the Keys Caf\u00e9 app, which is part of the Good Lock Utilities suite that Samsung developed with One UI. This lets you customize the keyboard exactly to your needs\u2014from the keys shown to the animations that appear when you press them.<\/p>\n
Getting Started at Keys Caf\u00e9<\/h2>\n
You can access Keys Caf\u00e9 by downloading Good Lock Google Play Store<\/a> Or Samsung Galaxy Store<\/a>. While Good Lock doesn’t come pre-installed on One UI, it is an official Samsung add-on, and there’s a lot to explore: for example, there are tools here for tweaking volume settings, creating 3D animated wallpapers, and adding additional processing options to the phone camera.<\/p>\n To design your own keyboard, find Key Cafe<\/strong> But plug-in<\/strong> Screen. Tap the download icon to the right of the utility name to get it on your phone, and when the download is complete, tap Key Cafe<\/strong> at the top of the list to launch it. Keys Caf\u00e9 will also be added as an app to your home screen and app drawer.<\/p>\n \n Keys Caf\u00e9 is part of Good Lock.<\/span> Keys Caf\u00e9 isn’t just about making keyboards. It will give you some interesting statistics about your typing – including your typing speed for the day – and there are also games you can play to improve your typing speed. If you don’t want to create your own keyboard, there are a variety of preset themes you can apply.<\/p>\n When you’re ready to get creative with your own keyboard design, open it keyboard<\/strong> Tab and tap Make<\/strong>. You’ll be given a selection of basic templates to start with, based on your currently installed keyboard: tap the thumbnail you want to use as a starting point, then select edit<\/strong> To go to the creation screen.<\/p>\n I’ve never made my own phone keyboard before, but Keys Caf\u00e9 makes the process simple and fun. The main editing screen shows a grid of all the available characters you have to work with, and these can be dragged down to the keyboard design. You can add keys for special characters you use frequently, for example, or for your favorite emoji.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n What do you think so far? Tapping on keys that are already part of the keyboard lets you edit them in more detail. You’re able to change the height and width of each key individually (others will change as needed) \u2013 so if you need a wider space bar, go for it. Press and hold multiple keys at the same time to select and edit.<\/p>\n \n Adjusting the height and width of the keys.<\/span> The arrow-and-block icon just above the keyboard lets you add rows (if no keys are selected) and delete rows (if one or more keys are selected). There’s also a green reset button in the top right corner if you need to go back to the beginning, as well as an undo button to go back one step. When you’re happy, tap the purple check icon (top right) to save your new keyboard layout.<\/p>\n To change colors and animations, you need to go to design<\/strong> part of keyboard<\/strong> Tab to Keys Caf\u00e9, and tap +<\/strong> (Plus) button at the top right: The appearance of the keyboard is controlled separately from the layout, so it’s possible to create many different combinations of the two if you wish.<\/p>\n \n Choosing colors and styles.<\/span> When you go into the design editor, there are three main sections: the main keyboard, individual letter keys, and animations that are overlaid on top (for example, for swipe typing). You can switch between these sections using the icons in the upper right corner, then make changes below – so for different keys, you can choose different colors for characters, backgrounds and borders.<\/p>\n On the main keyboard screen, you can change the background color and keypress effects \u2013 there are several different animations to choose from, which can be customized as needed. there is also one sound<\/strong> Tab here to change the sound you hear when you tap keys. choose save<\/strong>And your new keyboard theme is saved on top of the layout you created, and the keyboard is ready to use.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
