Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech, king of the Philistines. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-695\" class=\"text Gen-26-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2 <\/sup> <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span> Appearing to him, he said, \u201cDo not go to Egypt, stay in the country where I tell you to stay.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-696\" class=\"text Gen-26-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3 <\/sup>Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. For I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, and I will fulfill the oath I swore to your father Abraham. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-697\" class=\"text Gen-26-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4 <\/sup>I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and will give all this land to your descendants. in your seed<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (1)<\/sup> All nations of the earth will be blessed, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-698\" class=\"text Gen-26-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5 <\/sup>Because Abraham obeyed me, and kept my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-699\" class=\"text Gen-26-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6 <\/sup>Isaac lived in Gerar. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-700\" class=\"text Gen-26-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7 <\/sup>When the people there asked him about his wife, he said, \u201cShe is my sister.\u201d He was afraid to say, \u201cShe is my wife,\u201d because he thought, \u201cThe people here will kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful.\u201d <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-701\" class=\"text Gen-26-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8 <\/sup>When he had been there a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out the window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-702\" class=\"text Gen-26-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9 <\/sup>Abimelech called Isaac and said, &#8220;It is obvious that she is your wife. Then why did you say, &#8216;She is my sister?&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Gen-26-9\">Isaac said to him, &#8220;Because I thought, &#8216;If I don&#8217;t do this, I will die because of her.'&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-703\" class=\"text Gen-26-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10 <\/sup>Abimelech said, &#8220;What have you done to us? One of the people could have slept with your wife, and you would have blamed us.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-704\" class=\"text Gen-26-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11 <\/sup>Abimelech gave orders to all the people that anyone who touches this man or his wife must be killed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-705\" class=\"text Gen-26-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12 <\/sup>Isaac sowed grain in that land, and that same year he reaped a hundred times as much as he had sown, because <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span> Blessed him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-706\" class=\"text Gen-26-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13 <\/sup>The man became more and more wealthy until he became very great. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-707\" class=\"text Gen-26-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14 <\/sup>He had sheep, goats, cattle and a large family, so the Philistines were jealous of him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-708\" class=\"text Gen-26-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15 <\/sup>Now the Philistines had stopped all the wells that the servants of his father Abraham had dug in the days of his father Abraham, and they had filled them with earth. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-709\" class=\"text Gen-26-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16 <\/sup>Abimelech said to Isaac, &#8220;Get away from us, for you are too powerful for us.&#8221;<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (2)<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-710\" class=\"text Gen-26-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17 <\/sup>So Isaac went away from there and camped in the valley of Gerar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-711\" class=\"text Gen-26-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18 <\/sup>Isaac re-dug the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, because the Philistines had closed them after Abraham&#8217;s death. He gave them the same names that his father had given them. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-712\" class=\"text Gen-26-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19 <\/sup>Isaac&#8217;s servants dug in the valley by the stream and found a well from which there was a constant flow of water. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-713\" class=\"text Gen-26-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20 <\/sup>But the herdsmen of Gerar started a dispute with the herdsmen of Isaac. \u201cThe water is ours,\u201d he said. He named the well Isek,<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (3)<\/sup> Because they argued with him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-714\" class=\"text Gen-26-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21 <\/sup>They dug another well, but they started a dispute over that too. He named it Sitna.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (4)<\/sup> <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-715\" class=\"text Gen-26-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22 <\/sup>He left that place and dug another well. They did not want to start a dispute over him, so they named him Rehoboth.<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (5)<\/sup> He said, \u201cNow <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span> He has made a place for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-716\" class=\"text Gen-26-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23 <\/sup>From there they traveled to Beersheba. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-717\" class=\"text Gen-26-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24 <\/sup> <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span> That night he appeared to him and said, &#8220;I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not fear, for I am with you, and will bless you and will multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-718\" class=\"text Gen-26-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25 <\/sup>He built an altar there and announced<sup style=\"font-size: 0.525em;line-height: normal;position: relative;vertical-align: text-top;top: auto\"> (6)<\/sup> Name of <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span>. He pitched his tent there. Isaac&#8217;s servants dug a well there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-719\" class=\"text Gen-26-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26 <\/sup>Then Abimelech came from Gerar with his advisor Ahuzzath and his commander Picol. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-720\" class=\"text Gen-26-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27 <\/sup>Isaac said to them, You have hated me and driven me out from you, so why have you come to me?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-721\" class=\"text Gen-26-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28 <\/sup>He said, \u201cWe clearly saw that <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span> Was with you. So we said, &#8216;Now let there be an oath between us, yes, between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you, <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-722\" class=\"text Gen-26-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29 <\/sup>That you will do us no harm, because we did not touch you, and we did nothing except for your welfare, and have sent you away in peace. blessings be upon you now <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">God<\/span>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-EHV-723\" class=\"text Gen-26-30\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30 <\/sup>He prepared a banquet for them, and they ate and drank. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-724\" class=\"text Gen-26-31\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31 <\/sup>They woke up the next morning and took their oaths. Isaac bid them farewell, and they went away from him in peace. <\/span> <span id=\"en-EHV-725\" class=\"text Gen-26-32\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32 <\/sup>It so happened that the same day Isaac&#8217;s servants came and told him about the well that they had dug.
