It stands to reason that, if you’re an Android user, reading headlines that suggest Microsoft is shutting down your email service on your favorite mobile OS sounds a bit shocking. After all, Outlook is a huge program, and Android is the world’s largest mobile platform; Why exactly would Microsoft decide to discontinue its email service on Android?

That’s because Google isn’t sunsetting Outlook for Android app; rather, The company is killing Outlook LiteA lightweight version of the app designed for low-powered smartphones. As Neowin outlined, Microsoft This boycott was first announced in SeptemberTherefore the announcement came out of nowhere. What Is However, the news is that we now have an official end-of-life date. Luckily, Outlook Lite users still have some time to get their affairs in order, as the app won’t officially shut down until May 25.

RIP Outlook Lite (2022-2026)

Microsoft removed Outlook Lite for the first time in 2022. “Lite” apps were more necessaryEspecially in areas of the world with slow internet speeds, and for users with low-powered Android devices. This combination made some traditional apps a bit difficult to run, as “budget” devices struggled to load relatively intensive assets on weak network connections. Thus, lite apps like Outlook Lite offered a compromise: developers could remove many features that would otherwise spoil the experience, leaving only the necessary components to run the app.

But 2026 is a different world. Like budget Android hardware, network speeds have also improved. even A “cheap” Android phone It has enough processing power to run the apps most people want or need to use on the Play Store. As such, it doesn’t make sense for Microsoft to maintain two Outlook apps when the main Outlook option can now serve most users just fine.

What do you think so far?
<button class="ml-1 font-semibold text-brand-green underline hover:text-brand-green-700" type="button" aria-label="Comment section trigger" onclick="window.openweb.scrollToComments('01KP45ZP2DB15P7NPK76X47KNK')" x-text="hasComments ? If you’re among them, you have about six weeks to move to the dedicated Outlook for Android app. Without taking action, you won’t lose access to email in your account, and Microsoft won’t remove the app from your phone, but you won’t be able to access anything in the Lite app. There’s also an “Upgrade” option within the Outlook Lite app, saving you a few taps to get started.
