None of this was enough to bring her back to the country where she was born. The 26-year-old has been stuck abroad since April 6 after being refused board on a return flight from Amsterdam to Luton. She cleared check-in, security and passport control without any problems. At the gate, airline staff called immigration and told her that she could not board the plane because she did not have the correct documents under the new UK border rules that came into effect in February 2026.

What do the new rules say?

The Home Office introduced the change on 25 February 2026, stating that dual citizens can no longer enter the UK using only a foreign passport. All British citizens traveling to the UK must now present a valid British passport or a digital certificate of eligibility. The government said that public information about the change was available from October 2024 and a communication campaign was underway from 2023.

Why did Natasha fall through the gap?

Natasha’s father is British and mother is Spanish. His parents were not married when he was born in 1999, which meant that his father could not automatically give him his British citizenship. As a result she finds herself in a legally gray area. She has dual nationality but does not hold a British passport and has previously traveled using her Spanish passport without any problems. Now he has two options to go home. She can apply for a British passport or pay £589 for a digital eligibility certificate. Both need documentation to prove that Natasha’s mother had the right of free movement in the UK at the time of her birth. His mother never received formal paperwork to confirm this and tracking down documents from 26 years ago has proven extremely difficult. Natasha said she has been told that the process could take anywhere from three months to a full year to resolve. After being turned away from a flight to Amsterdam, she booked a last-minute ticket to Seville and is now staying with a family friend in Spain. She said she was lucky to have somewhere to go and someone to live with, but pointed out that many people in her situation did not have that option.

“Government is failing dual citizens”

Natasha said she took some responsibility for not checking the rules before travelling, but argued that after 26 years of traveling through borders without any problems, she had no reason to expect anything would change. He said that people have been contacting him on social media after seeing his story and saying that if they had not come across this situation earlier, they too would have faced a similar situation. He said the system is poorly designed and provides no support for British citizens who do not fit into the standard categories. Following Brexit in 2021, his mother applied for and was granted settlement papers. His younger sister, born in Spain, was also given papers. At the time Natasha was told she was not eligible because she was already considered a British citizen. Because of that condition she is now unable to go home. The Home Office said the rules apply equally to all British citizens regardless of their other nationality and are in line with the approach taken by countries including the United States, Canada and Australia.

Natasha Cochrane De La Rosa was born in Islington, grew up in London, pays taxes and has voted in British elections her entire adult life.
