{"id":66983,"date":"2026-04-15T12:16:43","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/top-aid-official-warns-security-council-that-yemenis-are-hanging-by-a-thread-2\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T12:17:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:17:59","slug":"top-aid-official-warns-security-council-that-yemenis-are-hanging-by-a-thread-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/top-aid-official-warns-security-council-that-yemenis-are-hanging-by-a-thread-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Top aid official warns Security Council that Yemenis are &#8216;hanging by a thread&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p>After more than a month of attacks and counter-attacks in the Gulf region, the fragile United States-Iran ceasefire remains in place \u2013 and in connection with that conflict, the military wing of the Houthi movement began <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2026\/db260330.doc.htm\">attack<\/a> Against Israel in late March.<\/p>\n<p>The tensions arising from this and earlier regional conflicts have had a long-term impact on maritime security, and the Council adopted <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/S\/RES\/2722(2024)\">Resolution 2722 (2024)<\/a> In view of the Israel-Hamas war two years ago <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2024\/sc15561.doc.htm\">demanding<\/a> The Houthis ceased attacks against merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>China and Russia early last week <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2026\/sc16330.doc.htm\">vetoed<\/a> A resolution to prevent attempts to interfere with international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz or threaten maritime security in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which lies between Yemen and the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>High food, fuel costs, increases fragility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>after a <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2026\/sc16292.doc.htm\"><strong>decade of struggle<\/strong><\/a><strong>Yemen has little room to absorb more shocks<\/strong>&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/osesgy.unmissions.org\/en\/news\/briefing-by-the-un-special-envoy-for-yemen-hans-grundberg-to-the-security-council\">Hans Grundberg said<\/a>The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to that country, recalling his recent visit to Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>He said Yemenis have long suffered inadequate public services, delayed salaries and rising prices.<\/p>\n<p>Now, they must contend with even higher costs of fuel and food due to conflict in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He said these new pressures add up to old pressures \u2013 obstruction of government exports, division of the central bank and &#8220;the widespread weaponization of economic life, <strong>For too long, ordinary Yemenis have had to pay the price of decisions taken on their own heads<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>And, despite widespread de-escalation since then <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/sc14862.doc.htm\">2022 ceasefire<\/a>He stressed that &#8220;this relative peace cannot be taken for granted&#8221;. Nevertheless, he stressed that Yemenis&#8217; future should not be held hostage to instability and that an inclusive political process should be pursued.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>human needs increase<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Adem Vosornu, Director of the Crisis Response Division for the Office for Aid Coordination, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\">OCHA<\/a>Reiterated Mr Grundberg&#8217;s concerns for the 22 million and growing number of Yemenis who need humanitarian assistance. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>This crisis is hitting the most vulnerable first and foremost<\/strong>&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/news\/security-council-ocha-appeals-unimpeded-access-yemen-crisis-deteriorates\">he insisted<\/a>Reporting that more than 18 million people are facing severe hunger and two out of every three families are forced to go without food every day. \u201cWomen and children are the first and hardest hit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, he pointed out that more than two million children under the age of five are severely malnourished and more than one million pregnant and lactating women face life-threatening complications due to malnutrition. <\/p>\n<p>Ahead, <strong>More than 19 million people lack access to health care and vaccine-preventable diseases are spreading rapidly<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, aid operations have slowed as 73 UN staff remain arbitrarily detained by the Houthis, assets seized, access severely restricted and supply chains disrupted across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gap between the resources we have and growing humanitarian needs is widening,\u201d he stressed. <\/p>\n<p>A decade of conflict has left people in Yemen &#8220;hanging on by a thread&#8221;, Ms Vosornu warned \u2013 &#8220;and that thread is now breaking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5>For complete in-depth coverage, including statements from ambassadors who were once again divided over the root causes and solutions to the Middle East conflict, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/sc_live\">go here<\/a>. <\/h5>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After more than a month of attacks and counter-attacks in the Gulf region, the fragile United States-Iran ceasefire remains in place \u2013 and in connection with that conflict, the military wing of the Houthi movement began attack Against Israel in late March.
