{"id":66986,"date":"2026-04-15T12:17:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/un-relief-chief-warns-the-world-is-failing-sudan-as-war-enters-fourth-year\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T12:18:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:18:40","slug":"un-relief-chief-warns-the-world-is-failing-sudan-as-war-enters-fourth-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/15\/un-relief-chief-warns-the-world-is-failing-sudan-as-war-enters-fourth-year\/","title":{"rendered":"UN relief chief warns the world is failing Sudan as war enters fourth year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>This solemn and stark anniversary marks another year when the world has failed to hold Sudan to its test<\/strong>&#8220;United Nations emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher said<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/news\/un-relief-chief-three-years-sudan-remains-test-world-failing\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/news\/un-relief-chief-three-years-sudan-remains-test-world-failing\" data-mce-> a statement<\/a> from Berlin, where the international community will meet on Wednesday amid continuing efforts to end the war. <\/p>\n<p>Nearly 34 million people were killed in the deadly fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and former ally Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on 15 April 2023 &#8211; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/emergencies\/sudan\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/emergencies\/sudan\" data-mce->A staggering 65 percent of the population<\/a> &#8211; There is an urgent need for humanitarian aid. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Millions of people were forced to flee<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>Some? <strong>14 million have been displaced, with 9 million seeking safety elsewhere in the country and 4.4 million crossing the border.<\/strong> In countries like Chad, Egypt and South Sudan.   <\/p>\n<p>such nations are now <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/us\/news\/briefing-notes\/three-years-war-weary-sudanese-remain-move\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/us\/news\/briefing-notes\/three-years-war-weary-sudanese-remain-move\" data-mce->&#8220;At breaking point,&#8221;<\/a> According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/\">unhcr<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Zoe Brennan of the UN migration agency said even as nearly four million people have begun to return to their communities, &#8220;they are left with broken water systems, destruction and a lack of basic shelter and health care.&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/\">IOM<\/a>Speaking to journalists in Geneva. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;There is no end in sight&#8217;<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>A senior official of the World Food Program (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\">wfp<\/a>) said in the same briefing.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;we are <strong>There was a two-year famine in some parts of the country<\/strong>And that is absolutely unacceptable in this day and age,\u201d said Ross Smith, WFP&#8217;s director of emergency preparedness and response, speaking from Rome. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are millions of Sudanese <strong>Caught in a daily struggle to secure food security, basic dignity<\/strong>. Families have exhausted all coping mechanisms. \u201cParents are skipping meals so kids can eat\u2014and kids are going hungry.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2><strong>effects of middle east war<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>Famine has been confirmed in Darfur and Kordofans, where the fighting is most severe, but the overall crisis in Sudan is &#8220;dangerously escalating due to broader global instability and the recent increase in conflict in the Middle East,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>The Iran war has disrupted shipping routes, increasing the cost of food, fuel and fertilizer \u2013 the main commodities that Sudan imports and heavily depends on. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Fuel prices have already increased by an average of more than 24 percent<\/strong>. Even more so in some remote areas. \u201cThis will have a deep impact on the prices of all major commodities and food items, pushing more people towards hunger,\u201d he warned. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>war on women<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>Another battle has broken out within the armed conflict in Sudan, according to the UN gender equality agency. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\">un women<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we enter the fourth year of the war in Sudan, it is important that we make clear what this means for women and girls, because ultimately, this is a war on them,\u201d Anna Mutawati, regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa, said from Berlin. <\/p>\n<p>UN Women has issued a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-04\/gender-alert-three-years-of-war-sudanese-women-on-the-frontlines-of-humanitarian-and-local-peacebuilding-efforts-en.pdf\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-04\/gender-alert-three-years-of-war-sudanese-women-on-the-frontlines-of-humanitarian-and-local-peacebuilding-efforts-en.pdf\" data-mce->report<\/a> Which estimates that 12.7 million people \u2013 mainly women and girls \u2013 will need assistance related to sexual and gender-based violence, rising to more than 3.1 million in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Ms. Mutawati said that &#8220;widespread killings, mass displacement, and most certainly the use of sexual violence&#8230;are embedded in Sudan&#8217;s war framework.&#8221; said James Reynolds, deputy regional director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Africa. <\/p>\n<p>He said about 70 to 80 percent of health infrastructure in conflict areas is non-operational or severely under-resourced and many communications networks have been destroyed. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Diplomatic efforts, appeal for help<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>As the war escalates, the U.N. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary General Antonio Guterres<\/a> They reiterated their long-standing calls for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access and safe passage for people seeking to flee their homes. <\/p>\n<p>His personal envoy Pekka Haavisto is leading the way on the diplomatic front and was in Kenya <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2026\/db260410.doc.htm?\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2026\/db260410.doc.htm?\" data-mce->last week<\/a> and productive engagement with Sudanese armed groups, civilian political actors, and others.   <\/p>\n<p>He will attend the Berlin conference, along with Mr Fletcher, the UN humanitarian chief, who concluded his remarks by highlighting the need for more support to deliver life-saving assistance in Sudan. <\/p>\n<p>Humanitarians aim to increase aid to 20 million people this year, up from 17 million in 2025, but their nearly $3 billion plan is seriously underfunded. <\/p>\n<p>He called for action now <strong>Stop violence, protect civilians, ensure access to communities most at risk, and finance the response<\/strong>&#8221;
