And while they’re great if you want to use after-market solutions like MagSafe battery packs and power banks, your at-home charging setup is the one most often used and relied upon. But sometimes, waiting for your iPhone to charge feels like watching paint dry, and it’s easy to feel like no matter what you do, it never quite gets fixed the proper way.

6 solutions for slow charging iPhone

Thankfully, your iPhone no longer needs to be tied to an outlet. These simple tricks can speed up your charging times dramatically, and many of them don’t require any new wires, cables, or accessories.

    1. Charge with the proper gear

Before you consider filing a formal complaint with Apple about your phone’s dead battery, stop for a moment and check your charging. The fastest way to charge your iPhone is with a fast charger. This requires at least a 20W wall brick with a cable certified for iPhone 15 models or later. If you have an iPhone 8 or later, your device can charge from about 50% battery in half an hour, and to full battery in one hour. But even switching your phone off to fast charging for a few minutes before heading out can make a difference.

Too: I followed the ‘Plus 5’ rule for wireless charging and it fixed the charge speed of my iPhone

It’s easy to tell when you’re using an adapter less than 20W. After the release of iOS 26, Apple will let you know when you’re charging your phone if you’re using a low-power power brick or an old cable by saying “Slow Charger” at the top of your lock screen. The wattage of these adapters often is printed on them as well. And since Apple no longer includes power bricks in its phones, you can buy either Apple’s 20W brick Or consider similar options, such as these basius And Ankar.

It’s perfectly fine to use third-party fast-charging accessories, just make sure they’re certified. In general, you will need at least a 20W adapter to charge the iPhone 12 or later.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/720.2133333333334;"> </picture>

Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET

    2. Charge wirelessly

Another easy way to charge faster? Remove the wires completely. Charging with a Qi2-certified wireless charger with a 20W adapter is the next best way to boost your phone (and it’s cord-free). To get the fastest 15W wireless charging you’ll need an iPhone 12 or later.

Too: I Added a MagSafe Charger to My Nightstand and Realized Its Untapped Potential: It’s Useful in 3 Ways

However, make sure to use a MagSafe or Qi2 charger to get the maximum 15W power. Older Qi1 chargers can also charge wirelessly, but you only get up to 7.5 watts of charge, which is noticeably slower than Qi2 and only slightly faster than a standard 5W wall charger. Again, it is important to pay attention to certified accessories to avoid potential fires or other emergencies.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/720.6399999999999;"> </picture>

Kerry Wan/ZDNET

    3. Do not charge from other devices

Just because your laptop or tablet has the ability to hypothetically charge your iPhone doesn’t mean it’s the most effective or recommended option. If you’re in an emergency or crisis, it’s fine to plug in your Mac or laptop to boost your iPhone. But don’t make it a regular habit. The best way to get the most efficient and quick charge is to use a certified setup with the appropriate wattage, and that’s not a USB-C port on your laptop.

Your computer always charges slower than anything else, because the ports aren’t designed to deliver power equivalent to any wall outlet (yes, even a small 5W power adapter). And forget about it if you try to charge with faulty or damaged ports and uncertified or incompatible cables. Talk about slow. If you’re really keen on this method (please only use a standard charger), be sure to at least use a certified device, such as Nomad’s Universal Charger.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/853.3333333333333;"> </picture>

Nomad’s universal charger for the Apple Watch, designed to charge from a laptop.

Kayla Solino/ZDNET

    4. Power down or switch to Airplane mode

This may be groundbreaking news to some, but at face value it makes sense. Turning off your phone to charge turns off all background functions: apps, display, audio, etc. So it makes sense that it would help charge your phone faster. This isn’t always practical for one reason or another, so there’s always the option to turn on Airplane Mode, which disables many background tasks by temporarily cutting off Wi-Fi and cellular service.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/719.3798449612403;"> </picture>

Kerry Wan/ZDNET

    5. Change some settings

There are some settings you can change that can help your iPhone charge faster by reducing background tasks. This isn’t always a given, but these can be good options to try.

low power mode: Turning on Low Power Mode can potentially reduce or affect battery-draining features like 5G, display brightness, auto-lock, background app refresh, and automatic downloads.

dark mode: Dark Mode may or may not have an effect on charging speed, but turning it on while charging your iPhone won’t do any harm.

dim your screen brightness:The digital display is one of the most power-hungry aspects of your iPhone. The brighter your screen, the faster your battery will drain, so turning it all the way down while charging can speed up the process.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/720;"> </picture>

Artie Beatty/ZDNET

    6. Touching the grass

Literally, you don’t have to touch the grass, but symbolically speaking, please do. If you want your device to charge faster, consider the radical idea of turning it off. If you stop using your iPhone while it’s charging, it will actually charge faster.

Get outside, take a walk, read, engage in a new hobby, or do something else while your iPhone is charging, so you’re not increasing the time it takes to charge by using the battery before you have a chance to increase your overall percentage. It’s a simple solution to a first-world problem, but it won’t stop any of us from spending less time on our screens.

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:1280/720;"> </picture>

Matthew Miller/ZDNET

    So… these things weren’t done?

Are you the lucky winner of an iPhone with a dead battery?
