Do you want to start your own successful enterprise? Evidence from experts shows that you are not alone. However, starting a successful business is not easy.

this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Suggests early-stage activity is strong. However, many new ventures do not survive long enough to become established firms, let alone exit through acquisition by another organization.

Also: 5 Ways to Use AI When Your Budget is Limited

The good news is that some entrepreneurs see their great ideas blossom into successful businesses – and these individuals have valuable advice for other professionals who want to start a successful organization.

Take Jaime Walters, who spent 23 years with finance firm Virgin Money, later as CIO, when he wanted to try his hand at entrepreneurship. He co-founded the successful money-saving app startup Snoop in 2019, which was acquired by banking group Vanquis in July 2023.

Today, Walters is CTO at Vanquis and continues to look for new ways to better serve the bank’s customers. Here, he reflects on the lessons he’s learned from starting a business and offers five best practice tips to other would-be entrepreneurs.

    1. Cool your jets

First, Walters said, don’t rush: “Don’t feel like it’s necessary to start cutting code from day one. Just give yourself a little time to think about things.”

<picture class="c-cmsImage" style="aspect-ratio:740/986.6666666666666;"> </picture>

Walters: “Just give yourself a little time to think about things.”

vanquis

He looks back at Snoop’s beginnings and says the team behind the venture spent the first six weeks brainstorming how it could create a next-generation wealth management app.

Also: 90% of AI projects fail – Here are 3 ways to make sure your AI projects don’t fail

Walters says the team recognized that the open banking system meant it could figure out how to present customers’ financial information around key concerns like spending and budgeting. But he said the team behind Snoop wanted to do more and provide actionable insights.

“We thought about whether we could come up with a ‘so what’ and give people personalized prompts and prompts that say, ‘Okay, well, we’ve seen this. You might want to try that step to see if you can save some money.'”

Walters said the team spent six weeks on a proper feasibility assessment, considering what it would take to stand up the business and whether it really had a good idea.

“And once we looked at what it would take to build the business, what risks were involved, what kind of technology we needed to use, what kind of partners we needed, and how we would get customers, we concluded, actually, it’s a good idea, and it has merit.”

    2. Partnership with agencies

Walters said the team didn’t rush into the market and start hiring people after deciding to start the business.

Instead, Snoop partnered with two tech agencies: one on the data and analytics side, called Inwizdom, and one on the product and mobile side, called Hi Mom! Respected Father said.

Also: I Asked 5 Data Leaders How They Use AI to Automate – and End Integration Nightmares

Entrepreneurs had clear guidelines as to what these agencies would provide and how their own business would grow.

“We told them from the beginning that, ‘When we’re done, this service will be run by the Snoop team we employ. This is our code base. We own the IP,'” he said.

Walters said Snoop’s team was clear on the direction of travel and told agencies that, over time, she would swap out agency talent for internal hires as the business grew.

“We took that approach over the course of about two years, and we ended up with a great partnership with those two businesses, as well as a great in-house team. So, that approach worked well.”

    3. Build in stages

Walters said he now looks back at the development process and marvels at how the team built their platform so quickly and effectively.

“We’ve created some amazing technology,” he said. “It’s high quality, with enterprise-grade security, performance, and capacity. And we did everything right.”

Also: How to build better AI agents for your business – without creating trust issues

So, how did the team successfully develop Snoop’s platform? The answer was to have short-term, two-week goals, Walters said.

Walters advises other professionals with entrepreneurial dreams not to plan too far ahead.

“Have a North Star, know the direction of travel, have a good sense of where you want to get, but don’t worry too much about planning in detail how to get there, because life doesn’t work in straight lines. You’ll take crooked lines to get there.”

    4. Provide enterprise-grade features

Since entrepreneurs want to grow their business in stages, it is important to get working software as quickly as possible.

“Everything works brilliantly on PowerPoint,” Walters said. “But just get working software out there, because only then will you really know if what you’re building is working or not, because you get the customer feedback loop.”

Also: Worried AI agents will replace you? 5 ways you can turn worry into action at work

However, once again, proceed with caution and do not compromise on quality as the services are put into production.

“If your exit strategy is, ‘We want a big business to buy us,’ then think of it as a big business in terms of the quality of the platform you need to build, and in terms of adherence to best practices and standards,” he said.

“Especially these days for anything you’re doing online, you have to have really good security.”

Walters said the standards his team has achieved prove that it is possible to build an enterprise-grade startup without compromising quality.

“We were not a bank, but we were a regulated business,” he said. “One of our potential exits was, and that’s ultimately what happened, that we could be bought by a bank. So, our security needs to be bank-grade, and you want to take the same approach for your customers if you’re dealing with their transactional data.”

    5. Don’t be greedy

Walters said entrepreneurs can’t assume that the business will eventually be bought, even when things are going well and the startup is growing fast.

“All you can hope for with a startup is to achieve an outcome where the product survives, your customers continue to get the services you provide and the jobs you create survive,” he said.

“You can’t predict the outcome. Many startups never make it. So, any outcome, any exit, is a good exit.”

Plus: 5 security strategies your business can’t get wrong in the age of AI – and why they matter

Walters said he and his fellow co-founders had to grapple with issues beyond their control, including the coronavirus pandemic, macroeconomic instability and geopolitical challenges.

“In the end, our exit was a good outcome for Snoop, and it’s proven to be a very smart acquisition for Vanquis. Because not only did the company get a great business, but it also got a great team of people who really know how to run a digital business,” he said.

“When you combine that capability with Vanquis’ strategy, those two things coming together were really critical to where we are now as a business.”

Qi Yang/Moment via Getty Images Follow ZDNET: Add us as a favorite source On Google.
