After a string of poor performances, MI are struggling badly at the bottom of the points table, and their bowlers are facing heavy criticism for their poor performances.

Not being able to control the runs is hurting Mumbai the most this season. The bowling attack of Mumbai Indians has been scoring big scores, and even when the batsmen are scoring well, the bowlers are failing to defend it, and this has been the story of the last five matches.

Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Mayank Markandey likely to be released by Mumbai Indians after IPL 2026

Among the bowlers, Shardul Thakur has been successful in taking wickets at crucial moments, but his high economy rate has become a major concern. Similarly, Deepak Chahar also could not live up to the expectations. The second name under investigation is Mayank Markande.

Also Read: MI head coach blames entire bowling unit for Jasprit Bumrah not taking wickets in IPL 2026

There are speculations that the five-time champions may release these bowlers – Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Mayank Markande – after the conclusion of the current season to strengthen their attack in this year’s IPL 2027 mega auction.

Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur joins Mumbai Indians via a cash deal from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of IPL 2026. MI picked him up for ₹2 crore to strengthen their fast bowling attack, and he also made a strong start by taking 3/39 and winning Player of the Match on debut against KKR.

But after that, their nightmare started as Shardul was giving too many runs. His economy rate this season is very high at 13.45, and he has already given away around 148 runs in just 11 overs. He has taken 6 wickets so far in the ongoing IPL 2026.

The fast bowler has been struggling with consistency, and the story was similar last season, where his economy rate was above 11. Due to his age, as he will be 35+ next season, and due to his expensive bowling, MI may think of releasing him before the IPL 2027 mega auction.

The five-time IPL champions are likely to focus on younger, more consistent and long-term options for the future.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar was retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026 for ₹9.25 crore, mainly for his swing bowling in the powerplay. He was expected to provide early success, but this season has been very disappointing for both him and the franchise.

Chahar has failed to take early wickets and is giving away runs heavily. His economy rate in the power play is a matter of big concern for MI. He has given away more than 20 runs in his opening overs, including 21 against Punjab Kings and 22 against Rajasthan Royals.

The biggest problem is that Chahar is not getting wickets despite being a powerplay specialist, but his failure has put additional pressure on the rest of the bowling attack, especially Jasprit Bumrah.

Mumbai Indians may release Chahar ahead of the 2027 mega auction due to his high price, injury history and limited role as a powerplay bowler to target more reliable bowlers for long-term plans.

Mayank Markande

Mayank Markandey returned to Mumbai Indians from Kolkata Knight Riders via a trade deal worth ₹30 lakh to strengthen their spin attack. MI trusted Markande as he knows the Wankhede pitch well and was expected to control the runs in the middle overs.

But the young spinner has struggled badly this season, conceding runs at an economy of over 15. In his first three matches, he failed to take a single wicket. The batsmen attacked him a lot and he could not bowl the proper length.

With other spinners like Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar in the team, MI may look for better spin options due to their poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2026.

Also read: ‘Shreyas Iyer has changed as a person’: Ricky Ponting gives interesting statement amid IPL 2026

In the current IPL 2026, the situation is continuously getting worse for Mumbai Indians and now most of the headlines are on their bowling attack.
