Global Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>why it matters<\/h2>\n<p>The main questions related to the ongoing process are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From which country will the next UN chief come?<\/li>\n<li>Will a woman be chosen to lead the organization for the first time?<\/li>\n<li>How will the five permanent members of the Security Council overcome their political differences in an increasingly fragmented world?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A quick reminder about the role of the Secretary General<\/h2>\n<p>The role of the Secretary-General, or SG, often referred to by UN insiders, is the chief administrative officer and top diplomat of the United Nations and is charged with the following tasks: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leads the United Nations Secretariat and global operations <\/li>\n<li>Brings issues that threaten international peace to the UN Security Council <\/li>\n<li>Acts as a mediator, advocate, and public voice on global crises. <\/li>\n<li>implements decisions of member states <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"img-with-caption\"><figcaption>\n<p>united nations<\/p>\n<p>Four candidates nominated to be the next UN Secretary-General; Michelle Bachelet (Chile), Rafael Grossi (Argentina), Rebecca Grinspan (Costa Rica), and Macky Sall (Senegal).<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>When will the next Secretary General be elected?<\/h2>\n<p>The tenure of current chief Antonio Guterres expires on December 31, 2026, so the next SG is expected to begin work on January 1, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Election process is already underway: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>November 2025:<\/strong> Member States invited to nominate candidates by 1 April 2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>21-22 April 2026:<\/strong> Candidates are questioned by United Nations member states in a televised &#8220;informal dialogue&#8221; in the United Nations General Assembly Hall<\/li>\n<li><strong>At the end of July 2026:<\/strong> 15-member Security Council discusses candidates behind closed doors <\/li>\n<li><strong>At the end of 2026:<\/strong> United Nations General Assembly formalizes the appointment <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>    In practice, the decision is usually finalized between August and October.<\/p>\n<h2>Who are the candidates?<\/h2>\n<p>The field often includes diplomats, prime ministers, UN insiders and senior international figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So far four candidates have been nominated. <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-with-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/Embargoed\/26-09-2025_UNGA_bts-05.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\" alt=\"The picture of the United Nations crest is displayed in the General Assembly Hall.\"\/><figcaption>\n<p>UN Photo\/Loy Felipe<\/p>\n<p>The picture of the United Nations crest is displayed in the General Assembly Hall.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>    how it works:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Candidates must be nominated by at least one United Nations member state <\/li>\n<li>Each country may nominate one candidate (singly or jointly). <\/li>\n<li>Self-nomination is not allowed <\/li>\n<li>Additional candidates may also nominate after the April 1 deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unofficial Rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nationals of the five permanent members of the Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States), known as the (P5), are not put forward. <\/li>\n<li>There is no official regional rotation policy in terms of where the SG should come from, although some argue that it is Latin America&#8217;s &#8220;turn&#8221; which may explain why three of the candidates announced so far are from that region. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Powerbroking in the General Assembly and Security Council<\/h2>\n<p>The Secretary General is appointed on the recommendation of the 193-member General Assembly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/main.un.org\/securitycouncil\/\">security council<\/a>(As stated in Article 97 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/about-us\/un-charter\/full-text\">UN Charter<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>While the 15-member Council, and especially its five permanent members, who can veto any candidate, play a decisive role in shaping the recommendation, the appointment is ultimately made by the Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>To become SG, a candidate must: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get majority support in the Security Council<\/li>\n<li>Avoid veto from any of the P5 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"img-with-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/assets\/2019\/02\/139485-Trygve-Lie.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\" alt=\"Trygve Lee of Norway was the first Secretary General of the United Nations.\"\/><figcaption>\n<p>united nations photo<\/p>\n<p>Trygve Lee of Norway was the first Secretary General of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Informal straw polls are conducted among council members indicating whether they encourage, discourage, or have no particular opinion about a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>These straw polls continue until there is a majority candidate without a single veto from the P5 member.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it likely that a woman will be elected?<\/h2>\n<p>The pressure is increasing, but there are no guarantees.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, there have been nine Secretary-Generals, but a woman has never held the post. <\/li>\n<li>member states are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/en\/A\/80\/544\">Women encouraged to enroll<\/a><\/li>\n<li>But gender is not a formal selection criterion <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Politics of the Security Council.<\/h2>\n<p>The final decision still largely depends on whether the P5 can come to a consensus.
