A gunman who killed at least six people and took hostages in Kiev has been shot dead by Ukrainian police, officials said.<\/p>\n

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that the attack took place on Saturday in the capital’s Holosiivskyi district, where the attacker opened fire at civilians on the street before barricading himself in a nearby supermarket.<\/p>\n

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram that special tactical police units stormed the supermarket after about 40 minutes of unsuccessful negotiations. The gunman opened fire on police officers during the standoff.<\/p>\n

“We tried to console him, knowing there was likely an injured person inside,” Klimenko told the Associated Press news agency. \u201cWe even offered to bring a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, he said, officers were ordered to “neutralize” the attacker.<\/p>\n

At least 10 other people, including a child, were hospitalized and four hostages were rescued, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the attacker was a 58-year-old man born in Moscow.<\/p>\n

Clemenceau said the man was carrying a legally registered gun and had contacted licensing authorities as recently as December 2025 to renew his weapons permit, having submitted a valid medical certificate at that time. He said investigators would determine which medical institution issued the document.<\/p>\n
