meaningful news<\/a>) – Nearly one in three evangelical Christians in Britain say they have experienced hostility because of their beliefs, according to a new report from the Evangelical Alliance United Kingdom.<\/p>\nThe study, titled “Confident Faith, Contested Culture”, found that about 35 percent reported predominantly non-criminal hostility \u2013 such as verbal pressure or negative connotations \u2013 while less than 5 percent said they faced hate crimes.<\/p>\n
Despite this, most evangelicals say they are free to practice their faith, with more than 88 percent reporting they can worship and express their faith openly throughout society.<\/p>\n
Additionally, nearly 55 percent said they feel comfortable talking openly about their Christian faith in the workplace.<\/p>\n
However, nearly half\u201448 percent\u2014said it has become harder to publicly express their beliefs over the past five years, pointing to cultural rather than legal changes.<\/p>\n
cultural pressure<\/strong><\/p>\nThe researchers said this reflected a growing gap between formal religious freedom and what they described as increasing “pressure, marginalization and misunderstanding”.<\/p>\n
The survey of 884 evangelicals conducted in late 2025 found that many believers are cautious about expressing their views publicly.<\/p>\n
Christians in visible roles such as politics, education, and media are facing greater scrutiny, especially over views on issues such as sexuality and gender.<\/p>\n
While 79 percent said they felt able to speak publicly about their faith, others cited fear of being misunderstood or damaging relationships.<\/p>\n
The report said such concerns may lead some Christians to self-censor, despite legal protections for religious freedom.<\/p>\n
concern over social change<\/strong><\/p>\nThe report also highlighted unease about the rise of Christian nationalism, with some 64 per cent expressing concern about its influence in Britain.<\/p>\n
Recent polls found evangelicals to be politically diverse, with many changing voting preferences.<\/p>\n
Separately, some Christian groups have raised concerns about broader cultural changes, including immigration and the increasing influence of Islam in British society.<\/p>\n
Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman warned of rising extremism and pressure on institutions in 2024, describing the situation as a “crisis”.<\/p>\n
The advocacy group Christian Concern has also stated what it sees as moral and spiritual challenges facing the country, with its public policy chief Tim Dieppe saying that many Christians “lack confidence in their beliefs and cannot well define or defend their faith.”<\/p>\n
call for confidence<\/strong><\/p>\nDespite these concerns, the Evangelical Alliance said that religious freedom in Britain remains “real, meaningful and worthy of gratitude”.<\/p>\n
It emphasized that the main challenge for believers is not legal restrictions, but how their views are understood in a changing cultural environment.<\/p>\n
The report urged Christians to avoid withdrawal from public life and instead engage constructively.<\/p>\n
This pointed to continued public openness to discussion about faith.<\/p>\n
The study ultimately called for greater confidence in society to “live honestly, speak respectfully, and contribute constructively.”<\/p>\n
