Tokyo(meaningful news<\/a>) – A tsunami warning was issued for Japan after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan on Monday afternoon, officials said.<\/p>\n

Authorities confirmed that the earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, struck at about 4:53 p.m. local time off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles).<\/p>\n

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 ft) high could reach coastal areas.<\/p>\n

Officials urged residents of affected areas to immediately move to higher ground, warning that waves could arrive rapidly and in multiple waves.<\/p>\n

“Tsunami waves may occur repeatedly,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement, advising people not to return to low-lying areas until the warning is lifted.<\/p>\n

When officials issue tsunami warnings in Japan, they are drawing on the lessons of 2011, when minutes made the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n

During the 2011 T\u014dhoku earthquake and tsunami, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake generated massive waves that washed away entire cities, destroying infrastructure and overwhelming coastal defenses.<\/p>\n

Approximately 20,000 people were killed or missing, and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes, leaving a lasting humanitarian impact.<\/p>\n
