{"id":82571,"date":"2026-04-20T20:44:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T20:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/20\/un-forum-highlights-health-care-for-indigenous-people-2\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T20:45:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T20:45:01","slug":"un-forum-highlights-health-care-for-indigenous-people-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christiancorner.us\/index.php\/2026\/04\/20\/un-forum-highlights-health-care-for-indigenous-people-2\/","title":{"rendered":"UN forum highlights health care for indigenous people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>More than 1,000 participants are expected to attend the latest session <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/social.desa.un.org\/issues\/indigenous-peoples\/unpfii\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/social.desa.un.org\/issues\/indigenous-peoples\/unpfii\" data-mce->United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)<\/a> \u2013 the platform that has placed their concerns at the center of international debate over the past 25 years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>From the Amazon to Australia, and from Africa to the Arctic, you are nature&#8217;s great protectors, a living library of biodiversity conservation, and champions of climate action.<\/strong>&#8220;United Nations <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary General Antonio Guterres<\/a> Said in remarks at the opening ceremony. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Health disparities persist<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>Delegates \u2013 many of whom were wearing traditional clothing \u2013 convened in the General Assembly Hall, where Aluki Kotierk, an Inuit leader from Canada, was re-elected chair of the forum by acclamation. <\/p>\n<p>Although indigenous people make up six percent of the global population, they account for about 19 percent of those living in extreme poverty. It is a failure of development.&#8221; <strong>The health and well-being of indigenous peoples is both a measure of our progress in this direction <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">sustainable development goals<\/a> and a condition for obtaining them<\/strong>&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Honor commitments, encourage participation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>The Secretary-General acknowledged indigenous peoples as &#8220;bearers of cultures, knowledge and ways of life that have sustained humanity for thousands of years.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Emphasizing that their participation in global decision-making has never been more important, he outlined four priorities for action, first urging Member States to honor their commitments. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2018\/11\/UNDRIP_E_web.pdf\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2018\/11\/UNDRIP_E_web.pdf\" data-mce->United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the United Nations system and Member States must ensure the full, meaningful and direct participation of indigenous peoples at all levels, supported by adequate and sustained financing.<\/p>\n<p>He called on societies everywhere to take immediate and concrete action to protect indigenous peoples, their leaders and human rights defenders, and to address the violence and risks they face.<\/p>\n<p>The final area of \u200b\u200baction is to ensure that indigenous women and girls can meaningfully participate in decisions that affect their lives, as &#8220;their knowledge, leadership and perspectives must determine the way forward.&#8221;
