Recently, I woke up to a message from our editorial team asking if I’d like to test HUAWEI’s new router. That’s all I knew, and while I’m no stranger to networking gear, the only thing I could be sure of was getting my hands on a Huawei router, which would likely be a nice-looking, premium model… but I had no idea what I was doing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Huawei Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro (\u20ac169 on Amazon<\/a>) arrived at my door about a week later, and this thing looks incredible – just look at it. For someone living in a mountain town, the light-filled peak is very suitable. My cabin has never looked so cool, and I discovered that it is also a fairly competitive router with amazing capabilities and features.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It may not sound like a broken record, but this thing looks absolutely amazing. I generally lean toward minimalist, sleek-looking routers. You want them to blend into the environment and not stick out like a sore thumb. However, now I realize it’s because most routers really don’t look good.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro is the first router I’m proud to show off. This is a statement that can clearly be seen with pride.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The truth is, HUAWEI made sure to do this as I think most mainstream routers do for aesthetics. The top part is mostly a dome which appears to be protecting a mountain peak inside. It seems to me that most of the electronics are at the bottom, but the router hides a transparent antenna inside the mountain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This mountain glows and can illuminate my entire cabin at night with a soft, warm light. It can also turn white when it’s cloudy outside, which is a nice touch. Essentially, the unit provides ambient lighting. It’s almost impossible to ignore. I like it a lot, but my girlfriend thinks it’s too bright to sleep comfortably. Luckily, I can turn off the lights in the app while she waits there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I got the HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro Suite Edition, which includes a main router (the mountain one) and a smaller satellite mesh unit. We’ll talk more about the options later, but this one is suitable for covering 120 square meters. More than enough for my small cabin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The small satellite unit is very simple, but still provides a bit of convenience with ambient light matching that of the main satellite. It’s not that bright, but I keep it in my bathroom, where it serves as a good night light. You can also turn off the lights in the app. This is a matter of priority. I love the soft, warm light that comes into my cabin during dark nights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Looks aren’t the only thing the HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro has going for it. It’s actually quite a capable router, and the price of \u20ac169 (~$199) isn’t bad considering all it has to offer. We are, after all, talking about a Wi-Fi 7 unit with dual-band capabilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It supports 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands, with speeds up to 3.6 Gbps. The 2.4GHz band can reach speeds of up to 688Mbps, while the 5.0GHz band can reach 2,882Mbps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

To be honest, both of these are more than my internet speed can reach. I live with a 500Mbps connection, and most American households use much less than that. I’m far from pushing this router to its limits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a Wi-Fi 7 unit with dual-band capabilities and an optional mesh system.<\/q><\/p>\n

All that said, plenty of more affordable routers can reach my internet speeds and needs just fine. I think, in most cases, what matters most is the number of simultaneous connections a router can handle. Inexpensive routers support a very limited number of simultaneous connections; Usually around 10-15 on the lower end.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It’s easy to reach this number once you start using smart home products like multiple phones, tablets, TVs, and light bulbs. Reach the limit, and performance will degrade rapidly. The HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro supports 128 devices, so you’ll have a hard time reaching that number. I have never used a router that supports so many connections. Apparently, it handles my 18-30 connections flawlessly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another important factor is the coverage area of \u200b\u200bHUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro. The good news is that it’s a mesh system, meaning you can combine units to cover more space. I personally tested the HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro Suite, which includes a main router and a mesh extender Priced at \u20ac249<\/a> (~$293). It covers 120 square meters of space (about 1,292 square feet).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Again, that coverage space far exceeds my needs, considering I live in a small cabin. As soon as I reach my parking spot, which is about 50-60 feet from the front door, my phone actually connects to my network. I am enjoying full Wi-Fi coverage anywhere in my yard, in and around the cabin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I can probably do just fine with the master router alone, optimized to cover about 100 square meters (1,076 square feet), which is still a bunch. If you have a larger home and need ample coverage, you can also use the main router and two extenders, which are said to cover up to 300 square meters (about 3,229 square feet).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How is the app and its features?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Although nothing out of this world, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro has a nice set of features, and a pretty cool app to match. I like that you can create a little map of your home and then mark where the router and satellite mesh units are. It can create a coverage heatmap to ensure important areas are covered. Simply tap the pencil button to start editing shapes, adding floors, setting up rooms, labeling them, and more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If you tap the Smart Diagnosis button, the system will analyze your setup, tell you how everything is going, give you recommendations and provide a score. My cabin is “excellent”, which is to be expected, since my cabin is pretty much a small studio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Parental Controls section lets you set schedules for specific devices and block specific URLs. I tested these features and they work properly. I live alone, so I don’t need these, so I removed the limits early on. Wi-Fi management lets you go deeper into some settings. You can also go to the Guest Wi-Fi button to enable, disable, or customize a different network for visitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Now, let’s learn about the better features. First, there is game acceleration. This is actually quite interesting. When you enable the feature, the router will recognize game traffic. It will then enable Game Turbo, which will reduce gaming latency by approximately 37%. It currently supports over 90 games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It also has HarmonyOS Connect. It is a HUAWEI service that allows seamless connection between supported devices and the router. It allows simple connection, and it works as a smart home hub.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I couldn’t do much with it because I don’t really have any other HUAWEI products that I use on a daily basis, and my smart home devices work perfectly with Matter and the Smart Assistant. I believe it can be good if you know all about HUAWEI ecosystem. Go to the Devices tab; The main feature here is the firewall with some security features.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

All things considered, the app is very easy to use and has a few, but useful, features. Large buttons help make navigation easier. Either way, the whole point of a good router is that you won’t need to use apps a lot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There is one big caveat with this router. I love it so much, so I was disappointed to see that it’s not readily available in many markets. Most importantly, it is not available in the US, although this is not too surprising considering the ongoing legal issues facing HUAWEI in the states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You can import one, but keep in mind that I had some problems connecting to the internet during the initial setup. I don’t know, for the life of me, what might have caused it, but after a while it started working for no reason. I was constantly restarting the modem and router, looking at settings, etc. Then I factory reset the router and kept struggling with it until it started working. I have never had any problems since then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ambient light can also be annoying for people who like to sleep in complete darkness, but you can turn it off if you prefer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro is quite special. The brand is known for its great designs, and this mesh router is pure proof of that. It’s also not very expensive, at least compared to most other high-end Wi-Fi 7 routers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Not only does it look amazing and unique, but the HUAWEI Wi-Fi Mesh X3 Pro performs great. It’s fast, can support multiple connected devices, and comes with a good set of features. Honestly, I will continue to use it, as it has become a great conversation starter in my cabin. I also like watching it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
