However, the only time you might notice a difference is if you decide to upgrade, or your current setup fails.

Here’s a look at four ways this ban could affect you.

1. Your next hotspot may cost more

The most immediate impact may be in pricing. There should be no shortage of supply, as existing models will still be sold, but some smaller manufacturers may find it difficult to sell in the US. And with less competition in the market, there is little incentive for big names to keep prices low.

Also: The best hotspots you can buy

There’s a solid chance that you’ll see lower budget options available as smaller companies are struggling to catch up, and the cheaper options that are available will probably be priced higher.

2. You probably won’t see much improvement when you upgrade

The ban applies only to new models, not existing models. While this isn’t exactly an area full of innovation, you do see new standards, like Wi-Fi 7, as well as other features and additions that can make a new hotspot more attractive. If a new model does not come to market, you may find that these improvements will either be implemented more slowly or not at all. Your next upgrade may be a small renovation rather than a major overhaul.

3. You may pay more for rental than your ISP

71% broadband users Take the easiest option and rent equipment from their ISP instead of purchasing your own equipment. ISPs that use older devices will not be affected by this restriction, so it may be more tempting to use whatever your Internet provider sends.

Also: This Eero backup device keeps you online when your ISP fails – I wish I’d had this a few weeks ago

However, doing so means you have less control over your network and fewer customization options. It also means you have a monthly fee that replaces a one-time purchase, costing you more in the long run.

4. You may be tempted to use your phone

While purchasing a mobile hotspot is more expensive, you may be tempted to just connect your phone to it if you’re working remotely or in a rural area without a reliable connection. However, using your mobile data can quickly become expensive, especially if you’re traveling internationally.

In addition to paying more to use your phone as a hotspot, you’ll likely face data caps or throttling, and your phone’s battery will drain more quickly, potentially causing more problems.

Cesar Cadenas/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a favorite source On Google.
