The two-month-long gatherings debated divorce prominently, and Francis&#8217; post-synod document sparked controversy with a footnote stating that &#8220;in some cases,&#8221; divorced and civilly remarried Catholics may receive communion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">Previous Popes have said that such Catholics cannot receive communion unless they live as brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">In his March 19 message, Pope Leo said that social changes make pastoral focus on families even more necessary than 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \"><em>amoris laetitia<\/em> &#8220;There is a bright message of hope regarding conjugal love and family life,&#8221; he said, and &#8220;we ask God for the courage to remain on this path, welcoming the Gospel always anew with the joy of being able to proclaim it to all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">Leo recalled the teaching of the Second Vatican Council that the family is &#8220;the &#8216;foundation of society&#8217;, a gift of God and &#8216;a school for human flourishing&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">Since Vatican II, he said, &#8220;the two apostolic exhortations, <em>familiar association<\/em> \u2013 issued by St. John Paul II in 1981 \u2013 and <em>amoris laetitia<\/em> (AL), both of which have strengthened the Church&#8217;s doctrinal and pastoral commitment to the service of young people, married couples, and families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">The Lord has entrusted families with the task of participating in the Church&#8217;s mission of preaching the Gospel, including in places where the Church can only witness through lay believers, the Pope said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">\u201cFor this reason, the Church&#8217;s commitment to this area must be renewed and deepened, so that those whom the Lord calls to marriage and family life can fully live out their marital love in Christ, and that young people can feel attracted, within the Church, to the beauty of the vocation to marriage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-(18px) md:text-(20px) first-of-type:mt-5 mt-(16px) lg:mt-(28px) leading-(28px) md:leading-8 normal \">The pontiff also pointed to &#8220;valuable teachings that we must continue to examine today&#8221;. <em>amoris laetitia<\/em>Including how to deal with family crises, how love &#8220;always gives life&#8221; in marriage, and the need for new pastoral methods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VATICAN CITY \u2013 Ten years after Pope Francis issued a controversial document on families, Pope Leo XIV will meet with bishops from around the world to discuss the application of the text for today. amoris laetitiaFollowing Francis&#8217; apostolic sermon on marriage and family, the debate over divorce dominated two controversial synods at the Vatican.
