Princess Diana once cried bitterly in front of Queen Elizabeth II.
The former Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997, surrendered to Her Majesty because of problems in her marriage with King Charles.
Royal author Ian Lloyd reveals in his book The Queen: 70 Chapters in the Life of Queen Elizabeth II: “By the mid-1980s, Charles had resumed his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles and Diana had begun an affair with former cavalry officer James Hewitt.”
“Although Diana claimed to be ‘terrified’ of her mother-in-law, Diana called the Queen unannounced and poured out her feelings,” he added.
“Sometimes, due to the Queen’s schedule, the Princess had to wait. A chaplain later reported to the Queen, ‘The Princess cried three times in the half hour she waited to see you.'”
Her Majesty then admitted: “I held her for half an hour and she cried continuously.”
“The Queen and (Prince Philip) welcomed (Princess Diana) into their family in a no-nonsense way,” the royal biographer shared.
“However, Elizabeth struggled to find much in common with the new Princess of Wales and admitted that she could not understand her personality.”
