TL;DR
- LibrePods, an open-source app that unlocks AirPods features on Android, is now available on the Play Store.
- The app has been updated to work without rooting, although the list of supported devices is currently limited.
- it is. This was accomplished after Google recently fixed a long-standing bug in Android.
Although the walls around Apple’s prized, exclusive (metaphorical) garden may be far from collapsing entirely, several recent developments have opened at least some cracks. While the biggest blow has come courtesy of Google, thanks to the EU order, opening up AirDrop to select Android devices. Meanwhile, some developers are also challenging Apple’s monopoly on hardware like AirPods. Although AirPods work over the widely used open communication standard Bluetooth, their key features are limited to iOS or macOS users. One developer is attempting to tackle the difficulties and recently began distributing an app that overcomes the challenges of using AirPods with Android.
LibrePods, which lets users enjoy a feature-rich experience with Apple’s AirPods on their Android devices, has been available to users since last year. However, if you install the app on your device, there were two problems. Previously, LibrePods had to be downloaded from GitHub and then sideloaded, which could raise security concerns. Second, the app required root, which would have automatically discouraged a lot of users.
Don’t want to miss the best of Android Authority?

Sadly, since the bug was recently patched by Google as part of the Android 16 QPR3 update, only a small number of devices actually benefit from it. If you have a Pixel device with the Android 16 QPR3 update already installed or running Android 17 beta 3 or later, you don’t need to worry. Along with these, Oppo has already patched the bugs as part of its Android 16 update. Therefore, OnePlus and Oppo devices running ColorOS 16 will support LibrePods without root.
However, if you have another device, you may be out of luck, at least until the manufacturer upgrades it to Android 17. For example, owners of Samsung phones and tablets will have to wait until One UI 9 is available.
Downloading LibrePods just got easier
While Google has resolved the issue, the developer is also making access to the app easier. Apart from being available on GitHub, the app can now also be easily downloaded from Google Play Store. Apart from the feeling of ease, the fact that it is available on the Play Store – and is constantly scanned for threats or viruses by Google’s Play Protect program – should instill more confidence in users.
With LibrePods, you can enjoy features like seeing accurate battery percentage, adjusting ANC mode, enabling wear detection, and more.
