Multiview has always been a bit hit or miss on Google’s Live TV service. You can watch up to four streams simultaneously. The problem was that you couldn’t choose which stream to watch. Google chose combinations, so users had to scroll through presets that often didn’t suit their needs. Now, Google is finally relaxing this frustrating limitation on YouTube TV, although it’s not completely open yet.

YouTube TV is starting this week officially launching Fully customizable multiview for almost every device. A limited rollout began last week, and now more users can choose any live channel, even combining NFL Sunday Ticket with their local news or soccer match to create their own split-screen.

The new Multiview builder is easy to use. When you press the button, you’ll see filters like Sports, News, Shows, Movies, and a recommended row based on your viewing habits. Just choose any live content, and it will come together on your screen.

There are two things to keep in mind. First, only live content is supported, so you can’t add DVR recordings or on-demand video to MultiView. Second, some “family friendly” content is blocked by this feature. Google hasn’t listed which shows are affected, but the filter is already active.

Another important detail is device compatibility. Less than 5% of older living rooms and mobile devices will not have access to a full custom builder. Instead, those users will get a limited version that only works for major events like the NFL or the World Cup. Google says people with these older devices won’t be left out completely, but they won’t get all the features.
