King Charles’ press secretary reportedly turned away the media when King Charles met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday.
They met when Mamdani said he wanted to ask the British Emperor to return the Kohinoor diamond, one of the crown jewels of the British monarchy.
When Mamdani was asked about his expected meeting with Charles during a news conference in the Bronx, he said, “If I were to talk to the king… I would probably encourage him to return the Kohinoor diamond.”
The mayor joined the king in a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. It is not known whether he actually made this demand during his negotiations with the king.
The diamond, estimated to be worth up to $1 billion, has been used by British royalty for decades and its ownership is disputed by India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, according to the New York Post.
