Devil Wears Prada Director David Frankel revealed that he “never imagined” directing a sequel to the 2006 fashion film.
Recently during a conversation Metro newspaper, the 67-year-old director admitted that after the release of the first installment the devil Wears PradaHe was unable to imagine how to bring the roles played by Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci back together in one story.
”Of course, when the movie was initially successful there was an immediate buzz. We love the characters, we love the actors, why wouldn’t you want to see them?” he told the outlet.
David, who is also behind the camera on the fashion flick’s sequel, explained, “But honestly we didn’t have the imagination to explore how they could get back together, not just get back together.
Obviously, they could have bumped into each other, but putting them in a class where the dynamics were the same seemed impossible and very repetitive, like, oh my God, we’re going to see Miranda (Priest) be cruel to Andy (Sacks) again. What is she going to learn?”
One reason the filmmakers resisted making a sequel to the film was the question of what would happen if the second part did not live up to audience expectations after the original film was a hit, marking its success critically and commercially two decades earlier.
The filmmaker shared, “A lot of things have to go right, a lot of luck has to happen. You look back and it’s like someone is punching a hole in it. That’s one of the reasons we resisted the idea of making a sequel because how can lightning strike again? This time you know what the goal is and you’re trying to build on that lightning and it’s a completely different kind of pressure.”
Furthermore, David admitted that he was doing the devil Wears Prada In 2006 it was “very difficult”.
She shared some of the behind-the-scenes struggles at the time, saying, “Meryl wasn’t happy all the time because she kept her distance from the younger actors, and so socially it wasn’t such a pleasant experience for her.
“And then Annie was going through some personal things, Emily was going through some personal things, we were struggling to make the film, the hours were very long.”
He further added, “We failed miserably in many ways. It was a really difficult shoot.”
