In match number 44, the two arch-rivals of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It was a reverse match as both the teams had previously faced each other at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where CSK had the upper hand and performed a double tonight, winning by 8 wickets.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first, it was a must win match for both the sides. The overseas team made two changes, with Krish Bhagat and Raghu Sharma making their debut for the five-time winners. CSK also made some changes, with the debut of Ramakrishna Ghosh and the arrival of Prashant Veer.
Hardik Pandya’s team disappointed once again
Batting first, they did not have a good start, with Will Jacques, Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dheer making small partnerships. South Africa’s openers were out for 37 and Dhir brought up his half-century in 34 balls and held on to one end while wickets kept falling.
Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form continued and he returned after a start of 21 runs. Dheer came back after scoring 57 runs and Hardik Pandya could not get going as his bat was also silent and he scored 18 runs in 23 balls. After the wicket of Hardik Pandya, the team could not score much runs and got out on the score of 159/7 in 20 overs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is coming forward to lead CSK
While chasing the target, CSK lost Sanju Samson in the second over, while Jasprit Bumrah was caught on the very first ball, Rickelton took the wicket of Sanju Samson on the last ball of the over. Urvil Patel played a blazing innings of 24 runs off 12 balls and accelerated the run chase, only to be dismissed by Allah Ghazanfar.
The CSK skipper completed his second half-century of the season, scoring the fifty in 34 balls and sharing a partnership with Karthik Sharma. After this both of them continued to score runs and kept the required run rate lower than the current run rate and ended the game with 11 balls remaining. Ruturaj scored 67* and Kartik Sharma finished the game with 54* with four fours.
He played better- Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya was not happy with the overall performance and felt that the season was over for Mumbai Indians. He gave credit to the entire CSK team as they dominated him in all departments.
After the defeat, Hardik Pandya said,Not the season. He played better, he bowled better, he fielded better and he batted better. A score of 180-190 should have been good. We couldn’t get the momentum going. It was more about taking calculated cricket. Overall, as a bowling unit, they were better and as a batting unit, we were not better. We went with the bowling options we had.”
After this defeat, Mumbai Indians are more or less out of the IPL; They remain at 9th position in the table. Hardik Pandya’s team would like to end the season on a high note by winning some of their upcoming matches. In their next match, they will face bottom-placed Lucknow Super Giants.
