Did you play hide and seek in your childhood? I did, and now I play it with my grandchildren. (They’re easier to find when they’re under the blanket on the couch.)
In our lesson today Jesus talks about seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness as our first priority, our main goal in life. And when we do, everything we need will be taken care of. The point here is not to wish us good luck finding something well hidden. Instead, Jesus urges us to pursue God’s will by keeping His purposes for our lives first so that we can live the way He calls us to.
The good news is that God and His Kingdom are easy to find. We can find God and His Kingdom in the life of Christ and among believers who hear God’s Word and strive to live by it. Their goal is to live righteously by acting justly and mercifully for all people, as Jesus did.
Jesus’ teaching ministry can be summarized with these words: “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). The kingdom of God is found in Jesus, who said, “Follow me” (Mark 1:17), and taught that he is the only way to reach God and his kingdom (John 14:6).
If we do not have any definite destination then we will keep wandering like this. Christians know, as Jesus showed, that their ultimate destination is God and His Kingdom. This is what we should aim for as we follow the teachings of Jesus through the power of His Spirit.
