Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend the upcoming European Political Community summit in Yerevan, making Canada the first non-European nation to attend the gathering.
The summit will bring together leaders from more than 48 countries as Carney looks to strengthen Canada’s diplomatic and trade ties beyond the U.S. following renewed tensions under U.S. President Donald Trump.
The meeting is expected to discuss Trump’s plan to reduce the number of US troops in Germany and the economic impact of the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Canada’s involvement is also being seen as a sign of Western support for Armenia as it continues efforts to reduce its dependence on Russia and strengthen ties with Europe.
The European Political Community was established in 2022 and includes EU member states as well as non-EU countries such as the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Serbia.
According to The Guardian, Carnegie Europe analyst Thomas de Waal said Armenia was at a critical political moment as it negotiates closer ties with Europe and neighboring Azerbaijan.
The summit will also highlight Armenia’s broader efforts to move closer to the EU politically while balancing pressure from Moscow.
