Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham criticized Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese after Reese’s social media activity involving her past and present romantic interests.
Controversy arose when Reese reposted a “low-light” video of Reese’s current boyfriend, Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Jr., dunking on Jaylen Durant.
With Duren widely rumored to be Reese’s ex, fans and analysts viewed the post as a calculated jab that aligned with the intensity of their first-round playoff matchup.
Cunningham and co-host West Wilson discussed the situation on their podcast Show Me Something. Cunningham suggested that Reese intended to embarrass Duren.
“There must have been something to keep (Reese) from, I don’t know, I wanted to embarrass him in some way,” Cunningham said.
When her co-host suggested that no conflict existed, Cunningham advised Reese to focus on her current relationship rather than past drama.
Cunningham responded, “But then go ahead! Worry about the current boyfriend.”
Viral social media posts led to Detroit fans chanting Reese’s name at Carter Jr. during the high-stakes Game 7.
Despite off-court distractions, Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons made a spectacular comeback, winning three consecutive games to sweep the Magic and advance to the second round.
Angel Reese has not responded to Cunningham’s criticisms as she prepares for the start of the WNBA season.
