Google Chrome’s “waits.bin” file has been gaining a lot of attention, especially for its forced, inexplicable, and unavoidable nature. This file is responsible for the on-device Gemini Nano features and is really good for your privacy, but users are looking for ways to opt out of these features, delete the file, and prevent it from being downloaded again.
Google makes it easy to disable this file and its related features, but ironically, this setting is not available to all users. If you’re wondering how you can get rid of Chrome’s “weights.bin” file, here are the steps you need to follow!

How to Disable Chrome’s On-Device AI Features: The Easy Way
Google says it started rolling out the ability to easily turn off and remove models directly in Chrome Settings for users in February. Once disabled, the Gemini Nano model will no longer download or update, so there will no longer be space left for the large “wets.bin” file on your computer – with the caveat that features that rely on the deleted model will no longer work.
If you agree to the agreement, follow the steps below:
- Open the Chrome browser on your computer.
- navigate to Settings > System.
- Disable “On-Device AI“
This will disable the feature and the weight.bin file downloaded by Chrome as a Reddit user will be automatically deleted. Lacquer Shows us:
It’s as simple as a toggle, and despite Google’s claims, it’s not actually available to many users.
How to Disable Chrome’s On-Device AI Features: Alternative Method
If you don’t have the toggle in Chrome, you’ll first need to tell the browser to stop fetching the models, and then delete the files.
Step 1: Disable Chrome Flags

- In the search bar at the top, tap “Search”customization-guide-on-device-model“
- When #customization-guide on device-model The flag appears, click the dropdown menu on the right and select “disabled“

- Click relaunch The button that appears at the bottom of the screen to restart Chrome.
This prevents Chrome from using the feature, preventing forced auto-download when you delete files.
Step 2: Delete the folder
Now that Chrome has been blocked from retrieving the file, you can safely delete the bloated folder. Make sure Chrome is completely closed before doing this.
On Windows:
- Press Win + R.
- paste it %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data and hit enter key on your keyboard.

There is a possibility that a future Chrome update will reset these flags and re-download the AI model. You can make changes to the registry to prevent this from happening, but this is beyond the scope of most users. The easier, non-nuclear option would be to repeat these steps again, or hope that a toggle will be available for you to easily disable the feature.
