The dismembered body of a missing tourist has been found at a landfill site in the Canary Islands.
Katie Oosterlink’s body was found by police on Friday at the Zurita garbage dump in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.
His 22-year-old son has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The 56-year-old Belgian expatriate was reported missing on May 4 by friends and family, who were unable to contact him for several days.
A frantic search was launched by local police and volunteers, who scoured the island for any sign of the mother.
Osterlink’s body was discovered by police four days later at the Zurita waste processing facility.

His son was arrested by the judicial police of the Spanish Guardia Civil in Las Palmas the same afternoon.
After a day-long investigation, the police raided the suspect, who has not been identified.
Police have reportedly reconstructed the events surrounding his murder.
According to local media reports, police also visited his home in Corralejo and other locations possibly linked to the crime.
Oosterlink’s body was transferred to the Legal Medical Institute of Las Palmas and will be examined to determine the cause of his death.
Authorities have not yet revealed how the woman died, or the exact circumstances of the alleged crime.
His son’s name has also not been released due to the ongoing investigation.
Further information is expected to be released after the autopsy.

According to Spanish Eye, Spain’s expatriate community has been shaken by the horrific incident.
Many foreign residents were closely following reports of disappearances since the appeal was launched earlier this week.
It comes after the dismembered body of a Colombian woman was found on a Gran Canaria beach last year.
Triana Arias, 41, had previously messaged a friend saying she was going to a party – but has not been seen since.
Her mutilated corpse was discovered by a local on April 27, 2025, at Los Enanos Beach in San Andrés.
Local police later arrested the owner of a popular bar in Las Palmas for alleged links to the gruesome murder.
