An out-of-control wildfire south of Whitecourt in the Canadian province of Alberta has prompted evacuations as emergency crews work to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.
The Woodlands County said residents east of Range Road 114 and south of Highway 43, including the West Ridge subdivision, were ordered to leave immediately Monday evening.
Officials advised residents to take pets, medications and important documents before going to the evacuation reception center at the Alan and Jean Miller Center in Whitecourt.
According to Alberta Wildfire, the fire is estimated to cover approximately 55 hectares and is located approximately 3.5 kilometers south of the city.
Officials said strong winds were pushing the wildfire south and the risk of it spreading further was increasing.
Firefighters, helicopters and air tankers are currently working to bring the fire under control.
The evacuation order was issued through Alberta Emergency Alert at 5:31 pm Monday.
Officials warned that the wildfire was still out of control and could continue to expand due to changing weather conditions.
Further updates are expected as crews continue suppression efforts and monitor conditions in the affected area.
