During a virtual address at the Smart Mobility Summit on Monday, Elon Musk highlighted that Tesla’s fully autonomous vehicles will be running at scale across the United States before the end of 2026. Tesla’s CEO made the announcement via video link, presenting an aggressive timeline that runs counter to traditional automotive industry forecasts.
The main difference between Musk’s claims and other autonomous vehicle technologies is that he has already started launching driverless cars in three major cities in Texas without any humans to monitor the process.
Musk’s 10 year prediction for Tesla
Musk made some far-reaching predictions regarding the future of transportation. According to him, in ten years, artificial intelligence will take care of about 90% of the distances traveled in the United States.
The billionaire took it a step further and said that manual driving will become an exclusive pastime by the mid-2030s. “Actually driving your own car will be a pretty typical thing in 10 years,” Musk said.
Tesla’s self-driving cars are now roaming urban areas in Texas without a human operator, a key difference from other cars that require remote human monitoring in testing stages.
This means there are no backup drivers for safety reasons as Tesla believes its self-driving technology is mature enough to operate on public roads.
