A rapidly spreading brush fire in southeast San Diego County has prompted evacuation orders as crews battle flames spreading toward Interstate 8.
According to Cal Fire, the fire, named Tussil Fire, broke out near Crestwood Road and Old Mine Road in the Campo area.
Officials said the fire has burned 30 acres and is spreading at a “severe rate” with “immediate structure threat.”
A large plume of smoke could be seen from miles away as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for several areas.
Officials warned residents to be prepared for possible evacuation as the fire headed toward Interstate 8.
Cal Fire also reminded residents to prepare emergency bags containing essential items such as non-perishable food, water, medications, extra clothing, important documents, first aid supplies and pet food.
The fire remains under investigation and crews continue to monitor conditions as the fire’s rapid behavior threatens nearby communities.
