High-yield savings account rates have remained stable since the beginning of May.

As of May 25, 2026, some online banks are still offering interest rates up to 5.00% APY, but these top APYs are typically limited to deposit sizes. This is still much better than average 0.38% APY, According to FDIC.

Banks and credit unions are constantly adjusting their annual percentage yields (APY) as markets react to Federal Reserve policy and inflation data, so staying updated can make a real difference. Here’s where the best savings rates are today – and what you need to know before you move your money.

💰Today’s Best Savings Rates at a glance

Here are the best bank and credit union savings account rates today:

    1. Varo – Varo is one bank that offers up to 5.00% APY on the first $5,000 with qualifying direct deposits. Read our full Varo review.

    2. Consumer Credit Union – CCU offers up to 5.00% APY for the first $10,000 on your checking account. Earning requirements are tiered. Read our full Consumers Credit Union review.

    3. Piebank – piebank InterCredit Bank is the online brand of NA and offers 4.40% APY has no monthly maintenance fees and no minimum balance requirement. However, many consumers complain about only being allowed to withdraw via wire transfer. Read our full PiBank review.

    4. EverBank – EverBank in partnership with Raisin offers a guaranteed enhanced rate of 4.10% for 90 days. Additionally, they are also currently offering a cash bonus of up to $1,500 for new deposits. Read our full EverBank review.

    5. CIT Bank – CIT Platinum Savings is a two-tier savings account.

Open an account with a promo code CITBoost and you will earn 4.10% APY* On balances of $5,000 or more for the first six months* – that’s 10x the national average savings rate.

After 6 months, you will return to your regular rate 3.75% APY* With a $5,000 minimum balance. otherwise you will earn 0.25% APY. See website for full details. Read our full CIT Bank review.

How do high yield savings accounts work and why do rates matter?

High-yield savings accounts function just like traditional savings accounts, but they pay much higher annual percentage yields (APY) – often 10 to 15 times higher. You can see how these rates compare to the savings rates at America’s 10 largest banks – and these rates put them to shame.

“Although rates have remained stable since May, more banks are offering promotions to attract customers. This includes guaranteed rates and cash bonus offers.” -Robert Farrington

The banks and credit unions on this list generally always have rates that are above average, so even if the Federal Reserve lowers rates and these accounts lower their rates, you’ll still be in the prime.

For example, a $10,000 balance earning a 4.00% APY would generate about $400 of interest per year, compared to less than $20 at a Big Bank rate of 0.20%. This difference makes it worth keeping an eye on rate changes regularly and switching institutions if your current bank ceases to remain competitive.

However, we expect rates to fall below the 4.00% level in the coming weeks.

What to know before opening an account?

Before opening a new account, review the key details that determine how much you’ll earn – and how easily you can access your funds.

    • For introductory or promo rates see: APYs can rise or fall at any time. But a strong initial rate does not guarantee long-term performance. Any rates listed here are not introductory, but some referral codes may be temporary rates only.
    • Transfer Limits: Federal rules no longer impose a limit on six savings withdrawals per month, but many banks still impose limits.
    • Security: Confirm that the institution is FDIC- or NCUA-insured, which protects up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank or credit union.
    • access: Many top-yielding accounts are online only. Make sure you can make deposits through the mobile app and link external accounts for easy transfers.

These details help you distinguish truly high-performing savings options from accounts that sound attractive but may include hidden limits or slow rate adjustments.

How often do savings account rates change?

Banks may adjust rates daily or weekly depending on market conditions.

    Are online banks safe?

Yes – as long as they’re FDIC-insured. Verify coverage at FDIC’s BankFind site.

Is interest on savings account taxable?

Yes. If you earn $10 or more in interest you will receive a 1099-INT.

Should I move my money if rates fall?

This depends on the difference in APY and your transfer limit, and repeatedly chasing the rate may reduce returns if the transfer takes time.
