Denpasar, Indonesia (meaningful news) – Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali has been hit by a series of gang-style murders involving foreign nationals, including the fatal stabbing of a Dutch convicted drug offender.

Rene Pauw, a 49-year-old Dutch national, was killed after he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle in the Kerobokan area late on March 23, police said.

Investigators said the attackers repeatedly hit the victim in the head, neck and upper body as he tried to defend himself.

According to the police, the attack took place in front of his girlfriend, who fled and hid near a nearby villa after one of the attackers chased her for some time with a blood-stained weapon.

Authorities have identified two foreign suspects, believed to be Brazilian nationals, and say both fled to Indonesia shortly after the attack. Police have requested assistance from international police agency Interpol to locate and arrest the suspects.

    Criminal background and targeted attack

Dutch media reported that the victim was a convicted drug smuggler who was on the run from Dutch authorities.

According to those reports, he was sentenced to five years in prison in 2005, but after serving about a year of his sentence, he absconded while on leave.

The man was later arrested again in Spain in 2011 and served the remainder of his sentence before eventually being transferred to Southeast Asia.

Reports said he had previously attracted the attention of investigators and may have been linked to a major Dutch criminal case known as the “Passage” trial.

Indonesian police said the motive was under investigation, although early indications suggested the killing may have been a targeted killing rather than a robbery, as no items were reported missing.

    increase in violent crime

Badung police, responsible for the main tourist areas in southern Bali, said authorities had launched an operation to identify and capture the suspects.

Police Chief Joseph Edward Purba said, “This case is a priority for us.”

The killing follows a series of violent incidents involving foreign nationals on the island, raising concerns about possible links to organized crime.

A forensic expert working in Bali said there had been a sharp increase in murders.

Dr. Nola Margaret Gunawan said, “From the time I started working in Bali until the end of 2024, I only performed the autopsy of one murder victim.”

    Murder rate is increasing rapidly

He added, “But in the first six months of 2025, I had one murder victim every month.”

He said the Dutch victim is the second murder case he has handled this year.

Last month, a Ukrainian man, aged around 20, was abducted by several people while he was traveling with friends and was later found dead near a beach.

Authorities said the victim was captured, attacked and killed, with human remains – including a skull and other body parts – recovered along the shoreline.

In a video circulated online, the man pleaded with his parents for help, saying, “I beg you, please help me,” referring to the ransom demand.

    murder by mistaken identity

In another case, Zivan Radmanovic, a 32-year-old Australian citizen, was shot dead at a villa in Bali in June 2025.

Investigators said he was killed after the gunmen mistook him for another man in a dispute over a debt.

In March 2026, a Balinese court sentenced three Australians – Mevlut Coskun, Pea I Middlemore Tupou and Darcy Jensen – for their roles in the murder.

Two received 16 years in prison, while the third was sentenced to 12 years.

Another person was also injured in the attack.

    Foreign presence and local concerns

Authorities say the incidents come amid a growing influx of foreign nationals into Bali, including Russians and Ukrainians who relocated after the war in Ukraine.

Thousands of people are believed to have settled on the island in recent years, some of whom are living in luxury complexes or working remotely.

“I have seen some Russians or Ukrainians flashing cash during parties here,” a local waiter told Worthy News on condition of anonymity. “I have mixed feelings about it, because while some people live a luxurious lifestyle here, many of their fellow countrymen are suffering or dying in war in their own countries.”

Authorities have acknowledged that the increase in the number of foreign residents has created challenges for law enforcement, including visa violations and suspected criminal activity.

    New security concerns emerge

Separately, police are investigating at least two cases involving foreign tourists who reported being sexually assaulted on the island in recent days.

A 22-year-old woman from Chongqing, China, reported she was assaulted and robbed on the side of the road near Labuansat beach in the Pekattu area of southern Bali around 4 a.m. on Monday, March 24, authorities said.

He told police that after leaving the bar he had accepted a ride from a motorcyclist, but realized he was being taken in the wrong direction before the attack occurred. The suspect later took her to his residence but kept her cellphone.

In a separate incident, an Australian woman reported being assaulted at an entertainment venue in Seminyak at around 4am on Tuesday, March 25. Police said a security guard at the venue has been detained as a suspect after the victim retrieved the items left behind by her.

If convicted, the suspect could face up to nine years in prison, authorities said. Police confirmed that investigations into both cases were ongoing, and said the victims were shocked and traumatized.

    ongoing investigation

Police said they were continuing to track suspects in several cases and investigate possible links to international criminal networks.

Several individuals have reportedly been detained, while others are believed to have fled the country using false or multiple identities.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain calm and stressed that Bali remains a safe destination despite the recent violence.
