According to the original report, Anthony Mantha scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins posted a dominant performance in the second period to defeat the New York Islanders 8–3.
Pittsburgh overturned a 3–1 deficit by scoring five goals in the second period, turning the tide in a crucial Metropolitan Division contest.
Mantha, who now leads the team with 29 goals, also added an assist.
“It means a lot. Last year, I struggled a lot. The confidence is coming here. No matter what, I know I have more to offer. Here I’m just trying to contribute. And I mean, the guys on this team have supported me, the coaching staff has supported me from day one, so it’s great to even get the results,” Mantha said, according to the NHL.
Rickard Rakell also scored twice, while Brian Rust added a goal and an assist. Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang each added two assists.
The Islanders started off strong, taking a 3-1 lead early in the second period. However, the defensive struggle proved costly.
“We were very bad defensively,” Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock said.
“(We allowed) guys behind us to lose breakaways, puck battles… Halfway through that period, we were very bad defensively.”
Penguins coach Dan Muse said his team remained composed despite falling behind.
“At the beginning of the second round we moved away a little bit from the things I liked in the first,” he said.
Islanders coach Patrick Roy described the momentum change as decisive, calling it “a turning point in that game.”
