Spending $300 on a gaming monitor usually means choosing a lane: You either go for resolution or speed and live with the compromises. ASUS ROG Strix Tries to make that trade-off easier. It’s currently reduced to $299 (originally $449) as part of Amazon big spring salewhich ends today, and this is the lowest drop according to price tracker. The idea is simple: Use it as a fast 4K display most of the time, then switch to the faster 1080p mode when you care more about responsiveness.
In everyday use, the 4K mode is what you’ll spend most of your time on. Text looks crisp, videos look detailed, and games have extra clarity that you can immediately see on the 27-inch panel. Colors are well balanced out of the box, and while HDR support is basic, it adds a little more brightness to the highlights.
1080p mode is more situational. On desktop, it looks so bland that you’ll want to quickly switch back. However, in games, it starts to make sense – if you play fast-paced shooters, the jump up to 320Hz is noticeable, and the lower input lag helps. This isn’t something everyone needs, but if you switch between slower single-player games and competitive games, it gives you flexibility without needing a second monitor.
What do you think so far?
There are some practical limitations to keep in mind. There’s a USB-C port, but at 15W, it’s more of a convenience than a real charging solution. You also don’t get a USB hub, so it won’t replace a proper docking setup. The biggest problem is the dual-mode switching itself. It takes a few seconds to go between 4K and 1080p and the display is forced to re-sync, which can be frustrating if you plan to switch frequently. Over time, that delay starts to break the flow and make the feature feel less practical than it should.
