Max Scherzer’s strong performance and timely hitting led the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Scherzer (1-0) pitched six solid innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk on four strikeouts.
Toronto’s bullpen, consisting of Mason Fluharty, Braden Fisher and Jeff Hoffman, finished the game with three scoreless innings.
The Blue Jays took control in the fifth inning. Jesus Sanchez drove in a run with an RBI single before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added another run with a bases-loaded walk.
Toronto increased its lead in the seventh inning with RBI singles from Kazuma Okamoto and Nathan Luks.
Ernie Clement later added an insurance run with a double.
Colorado’s only run came in the sixth inning, when Hunter Goodman hit a solo home run. Starter Ryan Feltner allowed four runs in three innings before leaving the game after being hit by a return ball.
Reliever Juan Mejia (0-1) gave up the deciding run in the fifth, while Zack Agnos drove in additional runs later in the game.
The win improves Toronto’s record to 4–1 on the season, as the team continues its strong start.
