Pete Hegseth has asked Randy George to step down as US Army chief of staff, marking the latest leadership change at the Pentagon.
According to CBS News, George will retire from his role as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, effective immediately.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the decision, saying, “The War Department is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our country. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
George, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2023, was expected to serve a four-year term.
A career military officer, he previously served in the Gulf War as well as the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We are grateful for his service, but it is time for a change of leadership in the military,” a senior defense official told CBS News.
George will be replaced on an acting basis by Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher Lanev.
Parnell described him as “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and Secretary Hegseth has complete confidence in him to carry out this administration’s vision without mistake”.
The move comes amid widespread changes within the army. Since taking office, Hegseth has fired more than a dozen senior officials.
