laguna beach was only for three seasons—and you and the original cast were only on it for two seasons—but the show had such a lasting cultural impact. Why do you think this show has held our attention for 20 years?
I think this is the moment in life when everything is about to change. You’re about to leave your hometown, and it’s exciting, and scary, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.
If laguna beach In existence today, how do you think it would stand out, especially given the inevitable involvement of social media, influencer marketing, stylists, all that jazz?
I don’t think you could make a similar show today. I don’t know what it will look like. I think part of the appeal of this show is that we don’t know what we don’t know. We didn’t know how to not be ourselves or filter ourselves. Apparently there were no stylists or makeup artists. We were just wearing tank tops and showing the movie. I think that’s what makes it feel so authentic.
We weren’t doing it to launch a brand or do anything like that that a lot of people do today, which is smart and I think, but we didn’t even know it was an option. A lot of us were upset that we didn’t have summer jobs and we talk about it all the time — we didn’t think it was ever going to air. It was a cool experience we had, and we thought it would be a fun little project.
I really don’t think we would have been wearing our tank tops as confidently as we were without seeing you and your friends and seeing what you were wearing. laguna beach In the early 2000s. I am curious. Where were you getting your fashion inspiration from at that time?
My friend. We were all just wearing the same clothes. There were some local boutiques where we all shopped. We’ll just wear a pair of Miss Sixties jeans, maybe a studded one Belt, a few tanks, rocket dogs – done. I don’t think we even thought about the way we wore our clothes. We weren’t like, “This is going to be on TV. We should take some time to prepare.” Half the time, we’ve just gotten out of bed. We are teenagers.
Which is the trend of that time that you think you would still wear or would wear and enjoy today?
I’ve always worn Ugg boots. The eggs were very big.
There are low-rise jeans, big sunglasses, flip-flops.
Actually I’ve always liked big sunglasses. I am strange. I’m committed to one style because I have to get special lenses in them for migraines. I’ll find a style I like, and I’ll buy it in multiple colors, and I’ll get all the lenses. Then every few years I update it.
Now, I am small. That’s mostly because I play a lot of tennis, and I want to be able to play them. But I’ve always liked the bigger, the better. I love a huge pair of sunglasses.
