Kyiv/Moscow/Budapest (meaningful news) – Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine during Orthodox Easter, raising cautious hopes of a brief pause in fighting, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the United States of ignoring evidence of Moscow’s military cooperation with Iran.
The Kremlin said the ceasefire is scheduled to begin at 15:00 Dutch time on Saturday and last until the end of Sunday, coinciding with Orthodox Easter celebrations in Russia and Ukraine.
Kiev previously proposed a similar Easter ceasefire last month, but it was not immediately clear whether Ukraine would respond and halt its military operations.
Previous attempts at an Easter ceasefire have largely failed. Last year, Ukraine said Russian forces had continued attacks despite the declared ceasefire. Moscow also announced a unilateral ceasefire around Russia’s Victory Day on 9 May, which Ukraine rejected and insisted on a longer ceasefire of at least 30 days.
Previous ceasefire raises doubts
Analysts say the latest announcement is likely to be met with skepticism, given the history of limited compliance and ongoing hostilities on the front lines.
The developments come as broader geopolitical tensions remain, with Kiev warning of deepening cooperation between Russia and Iran in conflicts beyond Ukraine.
Zelensky said the United States was ignoring what he described as “concrete evidence” that Russia is assisting Iran in targeting US bases and allies in the Middle East.
Speaking in an interview with British journalist Alastair Campbell for the podcast The Rest Is Politics, Zelensky claimed that Russian military satellites had gathered intelligence on critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf states, Israel and US bases in the region.
He alleged that Moscow passed this intelligence to Tehran to support the attacks.
Claims of Russia-Iran cooperation
“I said this publicly. Have we heard any response from the US asking Russia to stop?” Zelensky said. “The problem is that they trust Putin. And that’s unfortunate.”
Zelensky also pointed to reports, including from The Washington Post and The Jerusalem Post, that Russia has provided intelligence and possible military assistance to Iran.
According to those reports, Russia allegedly shared detailed information about Israel’s critical energy infrastructure and has supplied drones to Iran.
Zelensky warned that such cooperation could further destabilize the Middle East and pose risks to US and allied interests.
The comments add to growing concerns about closer ties between Moscow and Tehran amid ongoing clashes with Western officials.
pressure on donbass
The Ukrainian leader met President Donald J. Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Trump also criticized US negotiators, saying he spent too much time negotiating with Putin.
He suggested that Washington was pressuring Kiev to hand over the Donbass region in exchange for a possible ceasefire, warning that Russia would not stop its aggression even if it secured the region.
Zelensky said he believed he understood Putin’s “psychology and war motives” better than White House officials.
