Juan Ignacio Libana, Bishop of Chascomas in Argentina, issued “A message to young people wishing to enter politics”, in which he considered the characteristics that those wishing to undertake this work should possess, with special emphasis on the common good.

The bishop, who is also a member of the Socio-Pastoral Commission, said in his letter that politics is “one of the noblest of vocations” and “the work of charity is carried out at its highest level.”

“It means administering what belongs to everyone; it means engaging in dialogue, listening, bearing stress and seeking what is fair, good and just while always looking out for the most vulnerable, working for the common good and fostering the processes of friendship and social dialogue,” he explained.

He asked that whoever “enters politics” be a person of integrity, someone who “does not play with the dreams and hopes of the people.”

He outlined several essential qualities and habits that aspiring politicians should develop.

According to the bishop, such a person must be tough, have deep spirituality and be firmly rooted in values and principles.

Bishop advised that politicians should always keep an inventory of their campaign promises and deepest aspirations, so that they can periodically hold themselves accountable and honestly examine their conscience.

He stressed the importance of humility and urged politicians not to be obsessed with their image. Instead, they must know how to “give up and die” for themselves and their own little interests.

They must be quick to ask for forgiveness and know how to relax, pray and reflect each day away from their work, enjoying the simple things in life – nature, family, perfect friendships and quiet prayer – with moderation.

Libana said politicians should never lose their softness, their smile or their simplicity and they should find time to play with their children and visit their elders.

He warned against the allure of luxury, saying that politicians should not be fond of travel, “high living” or extravagant living, as these temptations often lead to abuse of power and remove them from the realities of ordinary people.

Bishop also stressed the need for good and honest comrades and suggested that politicians should surround themselves with true friends who are willing to correct them simply and honestly. He advised always having a wise person nearby to advise, listen and learn.

Finally, Libana called for a clear understanding of one’s internal motivations for entering politics. He said, if the goal is to make money, become famous, have a good time or gain recognition, then one is mistaken about the nature of business.

“Temptations abound,” the bishop stressed, “so one must remain steadfast.” In his view, politics “should be a place for the best, most virtuous people, not a ‘den of thieves’.”

He said, “We cannot continue playing with the future of our people, who are already tired and fed up with so much narrow-mindedness and mediocrity. This applies equally to every public servant, including us who are devoutly religious.”

“Let us pray to God to raise up public servants who are passionate and passionate, sober and ascetic, simple and humble – ordinary men and women who are approachable, and full of tenderness and love for our beloved Argentina. Our Motherland deserves it,” he stressed.
