In The Boys, Antony Starr’s complex superhero character, Homelander, has become a pop culture sensation over the past few years.
Memes are part of the reason why the role of villain has become so ingrained in current trends.
In a recent interview, the star himself accepted this new reality, saying that his entire career is turning towards memes.
“I’m in it for the memes, man… my career is all about the memes now,” he said during an appearance on Today when asked to recreate his famous memes from Homelander in The Boys.
When one of the hosts asked the star to recreate the memes without sound effects, he responded with a funny quip, “Sound effects should be combined with the meme… It’s very funny if you don’t do that. It’s absolutely cruel.”
Responding to one of his popular memes, the actor jokingly said, “It almost looks like a special effect. I’m sure they made it bigger, but this is my favorite.”
However, the stars are not stopping there.
He is directly addressing his fanbase by hitting out at the memes and saying, ‘The worse the better.’ The stupider I look, the happier I am.”
In addition to daring fans to create the funniest meme about Homelander, the star said he never thought The Boys’ supervillain would become so popular in pop culture.
“Somehow the worst character on the show has become one of the most remembered,” the star said, adding, “I never knew I’d hold that position in pop culture… I’m really thrilled.”
The final season episode 3 of The Boys arrives on Prime Video on April 15.
