Google Discover used to be useful, now my feed is polluted with random tweets and TikToks

I have a love/hate relationship with Google Discover, though it leans more towards the former. I’ve learned to curate my Discover feed by carefully removing posts, sources, and content I don’t want to see, and this has been effective for some time. However, a few months ago everything seemed to change overnight.

Now, it seems that no matter how many times I tell Discover that I’m “not interested in a topic” or “watch less content like this”, the more irrelevant content I encounter. I am also not alone. Numerous threads in various subreddits (1, 2, 3) suggests that others have noticed a major drop in content quality recently.

Perhaps the most obvious example of Discover’s decline is the increased spotlight on social media posts from platforms like X and TikTok. Even more annoying are the intermittent advertisements of local political parties on YouTube.

I will admit that some posts are really useful, but I don’t necessarily get my news from X. I would appreciate the option to ban content from the site entirely, as I can for every other source on Discover. However, I can only tell Discover to avoid content from particular accounts, not X as a whole.

It would be wrong to call Discover completely useless, but now more than ever it feels like a tool Google uses to push what it wants to show me, rather than something I can use to read what I choose.
