Reflecting on our Sunday Readings with Fr Ryan Innas Muthu

    Jul 03, 2026

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)Readings: Zechariah 9: 9-10;Romans 8: 9, 11-13;Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30The Scripture readings today present a profound spiritual truth: God’s Kingdom is hidden from the proud but revealed to the humble. This passage from the Gospel of Matthew marks a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. After facing rejection from many towns and religious leaders, Jesus praises the Father because the mystery of God’s Kingdom is revealed, not to the self-sufficient, but to the humble and receptive. Jesus declares that “You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to little ones” (Mt 11:25). The message of the Kingdom is hidden from the “wise” and revealed to “little ones.” The term “little ones” does not simply refer to children in age, but to those who acknowledge their dependence on God. They are humble, teachable, and trusting. Rather than relying on their own wisdom and strength, they open their hearts to God’s grace. They include the disciples, the poor, sinners who have repented, and ordinary people who welcomed Jesus with faith. The “wise and intelligent,” on the other hand, represent those who believe they have no need for God. They are proud and selfreliant, convinced of their own righteousness and understanding. In Jesus’ time, many religious leaders were experts in the Law and Scriptures. They possessed great knowledge about God, yet many failed to recognise Jesus as the Messiah. They were confident in their own interpretations, expected a different kind of Messiah, and were unwilling to change their views when confronted with God’s revelation in Christ. Jesus therefore challenges the Scribes and Pharisees who knew the Law and the Scriptures but failed to recognise the One to whom the Scriptures pointed. He is not condemning intelligence or learning; rather, He is warning against intellectual pride. The truth is hidden not because God wishes to exclude anyone, but because pride blinds the heart and prevents one from receiving God’s revelation. The words of Jesus continue to challenge us today. Many people are highly educated and well-informed, yet remain distant from God. The obstacle is often not a lack of knowledge but a lack of humility. When we approach God with humility, what is hidden becomes revealed. The first reading from the Book of Zechariah reinforces this message. The prophet announces the coming of the Messiah. The people of Israel expected a powerful king who would defeat their enemies through military strength. Instead, God sends a King of humility who comes riding on a donkey. The donkey symbolises peace and humility. The Messiah’s power is expressed not through domination but through service. God’s salvation enters the world in a way that challenges human expectations and worldly pride. The second reading from St Paul’s Letter to the Romans develops this theme further by contrasting life according to the flesh with life according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the flesh place themselves at the centre of their lives. They seek security in their own desires, ambitions, and achievements. Those who live according to the Spirit allow God to guide and transform them. The Spirit cannot fully dwell in a heart dominated by pride, self-centredness, and selfsufficiency. Rather, the Spirit finds a home in hearts that are humble and willing to surrender to God. Through the Spirit, believers participate in the very life of Christ and are empowered to live according to God’s will. One of the greatest challenges facing Christians today is the call to humility in a culture where self-promotion, competition, status, and recognition are desires of the ordinary person who wishes to rise above others. However, Jesus teaches us to become like little children — humble, trusting, and dependent on God. Humility helps us recognise that our talents, successes, and opportunities are gifts from God. It also enables us to learn from others, to serve others and to remain open to correction and forgiveness.True humility is not weakness but strength rooted in God’s grace. It means carrying our daily crosses with faith, sacrifice, and love for others. In a world that encourages selfexaltation, Jesus invites us: “learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart” (Mt 11:29). By learning humility from Christ, we become the “little ones” to whom the Father reveals the mysteries of His Kingdom and grants the peace and rest that only He can give.
