Progressive Democrat Annalia Mejia has won the New Jersey special election for the U.S. House, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway and securing a key seat for Democrats.
The race for Mejia was announced shortly after polls closed on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.
She will first fill Mickey Sherrill’s seat and serve until January.
His victory ensures that Democrats retain control of the 11th District seat, as Republicans have only a narrow majority in the House. It also adds to recent Democratic victories ahead of the midterm elections.
MejÃa criticized his policies and leadership during the campaign on a platform focused on economic recovery and opposition to Donald Trump.
According to The Guardian, Hathaway described MejÃa’s policies as too left-leaning, writing: “I’m running to bring common-sense leadership to DC + to deliver results for our families, not to advance a far-left agenda.”
The district, covering parts of northern New Jersey, once a Republican stronghold, has shifted toward the Democrats in recent years.
Mejia, who previously worked with Bernie Sanders during the 2020 presidential campaign, could face Hathaway again in November when the seat is up for election for a full two-year term.
