Why 'Give Us Today Our Daily Bread' Matters in an Anxious Economy
    Brought to you by

    Key Points

    • Rising costs can make financial anxiety feel normal, especially for families living paycheck to paycheck.
    • Scripture calls Christians to acknowledge fear without being ruled by it.
    • Money is fleeting, but God’s Word, provision, and presence remain steady.
    • Praying for daily bread teaches believers to depend on God one day at a time.
    • Gratitude helps us recognize God’s goodness in ordinary, heavy, and uncertain moments.

I recently told my husband that I don’t know how families who live paycheck to paycheck are surviving this economy. All it takes is a declaration of war, something outside everyday civilians’ control, and every home is impacted.

Gas prices go up, which means any products or goods that must be shipped to your house now cost more. Groceries cost more too because it’s more expensive for delivery trucks to haul the food. Everyone feels this unavoidable pressure in the checkout lines.

The cost of living, let alone the enjoyment of living, is at stake. Granted, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates steady, but inflation looms while Americans struggle. The anxiety that so many of us feel as we check our bank accounts is normal, even common. As humans, it’s in our nature to fear big things outside our control, especially when they threaten the financial stability of our homes.

However, as Christians, we are called to live lives of faith, lives not controlled by fear:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

If we are to live with the boldness provided by the Spirit, how should we approach anxiety when we pray Matthew 6:11 (NIV), “Give us today our daily bread”?

For Christians, praying for daily bread is not a denial of real financial pressure, but a daily act of trust in the God who provides what we need and frees us from being ruled by fear

Where Does Financial Anxiety Come From?

When I can’t seem to understand the way something should be, its original intent and purpose, I revisit Eden, the place God so lovingly made, the only place outside God’s otherworldly realm, that, at one time, never knew sin.

All throughout the early chapters of Genesis, we see that everything God made was good—and by good, it was perfect. The creation mirrored the Creator and reflected His heart.

We only know fear and shame because of sin, because of the way things were not designed to unfold. Thus, it’s dire for believers not only to know but also to accept that anxiety is from the enemy. We weren’t designed to be slaves to fear. Rather, we were designed to overcome fear through the power of Christ and His gift of the resurrection:

“So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 (NLT)

Why Are Finances Too Fleeting to Carry Our Hope?

When we consider the financial stress that so many Americans currently face, we must recognize that finances are fleeting. Whether we are riding a money high or facing a money low, we will never be able to keep a firm grip on our finances.

    The stock market crashes

    Inflation rises

    Banks get cyber-hacked.

    Interest rates skyrocket.

People make deceptive bets and trades

    Businesses fail

    Scammers embezzle.

    Spouses lose jobs.

    And the list goes on.

It’s natural to be stressed when money is tight, but it’s possible not to be controlled and consumed by the stress when you remember just how fleeting everything in this world, apart from Christ, is.

    Consider these Scripture verses:

“The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 (NLT)

“Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” Proverbs 23:4-5 (NIV)

“Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.” Ecclesiastes 5:15 (NIV)

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19-20

When Christ provided an example prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6, it was a prayer rooted in trust in the Almighty. Our daily bread isn’t a savings account or a 401K. It’s a daily choice to trust that God will provide the day’s needs. And it’s trusting that what God provides is what we need, nothing more and nothing less.

We aren’t allowing God to truly be God in our lives if we aren’t trusting Him with every second, believing He not only knows what’s best for us but will also see that it happens.

Why Do Christians Need to Ask for Daily Bread?

If we surrender to trust and allow God to care for our daily needs, we enter a more intimate relationship with Him by default, one that requires daily, consistent communication.

And is that not what God wants? Communion with us?

Just last year, I shared my heart in a blog post that I titled “Your Daily Bread Isn’t What You Think.” In it, I said:

I’ve had the great honor of loving wonderful people. Yet, the more I love, the more I fear—a most vicious dichotomy for a woman with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder who needs, hope to survive…

Perhaps our imperfect, flawed shells simply can’t hold all that love is if we don’t sprinkle our faults, fears, and flaky ways of existing all over its righteous intentions. Regardless, fear isn’t something I want; her excuses were never welcome. She’s just some cruel guest who showed up at my doorstep, and before I could tell her she wasn’t allowed in my home, she tethered me to her with a chain I can’t cut

Oddly enough, fear and all her cruel baggage have brought me to a dependence on God that, for so long, I didn’t want. It wasn’t because I didn’t love God. It wasn’t because I didn’t like Him or believe in His deity. It’s because I loved myself more. I liked how I could puff myself up with achievements and all the invisible badges they give young women who sit still and follow the church’s dress code. If I could be my own deity, I could justify every decision I made, even the self-pleasing ones I decorated with Bible verses so they looked just “Jesus” enough to pass as righteous.

Nonetheless, this new role as a mother is my daily cross, a humble pie diet forcing me to reconcile how changing diapers is holy work, that saying “never” will come back to bite you, and that I know nothing, whether it concerns discipline, discipleship, nutrition, or sickness. Even the things I do know, my mind now forgets. I have no choice but to confess that my brain divorced my body and now lives with someone else, somewhere else. Such are the vague details I’m privy to…

Our daily bread is our meaning. It’s heaven’s whispers to keep going because Something bigger and better sustains us when we are starved for life to mean more and be more…

I encourage you to recognize that your daily bread is much more than the food on your table. Your daily bread is the grace and mercy that sustain you as you discover your weaknesses and surrender pride and perfection to the God who does all things with a flawless heart…

I’ve fought pride my entire life, but the nitty-gritty of mothering a child has quickly taught me that I can’t do it all. I can’t even do half of what I should. Though this doesn’t always settle well in my mind, it’s settled in my soul that I’m safe—that fear has no place—when I thank God for my daily bread in all life’s unpleasant, heavy moments.

I encourage you to do the same, to simply whisper, “Thank you for my daily bread,” whenever you see God’s goodness overcome life’s worst, whenever it promises your best a rest from life’s striving syllabus.

And on the hardest days, I challenge you to say the whole prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, aloud. There’s something incredibly powerful about walking yourself through each line, letting your soul connect with [your] mind as you give [its] words meaning…

May we ask God for His provision daily, and may we trust that His goodness forever conquers all our fears.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6 (KJV)
