Kyiv, Ukraine — A gunman who killed at least five people on the streets of Kiev on Saturday and then took hostages and barricaded himself in a nearby supermarket has been shot dead by police, Ukrainian authorities said.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry head Ihor Klimenko said in a statement on social media that special tactical police units stormed the store after attempts to contact a negotiator with the gunman failed. The attacker was killed while resisting arrest, he said.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least five people were killed and 10 others were hospitalized.
Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the shooting took place in the Holosiivskyi district of Kiev. Television footage from the scene showed police taking cover in the shopping mall where the supermarket was located while gunfire continued. People standing nearby were taken away from the spot.
