Kyiv/Budapest (meaningful news) – At least six people were killed in a district of Kiev after a gunman opened fire in a district of Kiev before barricading himself inside a supermarket, where he later died in a confrontation with police, authorities said.
President Volodymyr Zelensky quoted Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko as saying that five people were initially confirmed dead in the Holosiivskyi district of the Ukrainian capital, while 10 others were being treated in hospital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the social media platform Telegram that one of the injured, a woman, later died, raising the death toll to six.
Disturbing video footage obtained by Worthy News shows a man being shot at close range, while the reactions of witnesses are shocking.
Klitschko confirmed, “Special forces of the National Police stormed the store where the attacker was. He took people hostage and shot at a policeman during detention. Earlier, negotiators had tried to contact him.”
Police killed the shooter
“The shooter in Kiev was shot dead during arrest,” Klymenko said in comments published on Telegram.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the suspect has been identified as a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow.
He said the fire broke out in the Kiev apartment where the suspect was registered.
No immediate purpose was given for this.
Such shootings are relatively rare in Ukraine, where mass civilian casualties in recent years have been linked to the ongoing war following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
