The S&P 500 moved up on the Hormuz open, with Iran dropping enriched uranium and similar fancy headlines that were dialed back after the closing bell. Bullish talk as a prelude to a weekend of fun? We would do well to take a serious look at who actually controls Hormuz traffic, and why the political leadership there has been criticized for not exercising the relevant market-moving powers to bring things to light – such as making up for non-compliance with non-existent commitments. Was this done in the interest of the Lebanon ceasefire, and how are things really looking there?
This may create some downside risk for the weekend – although note that throughout the war, the USD has not moved with the same safe haven strength as during previous safe haven demand episodes, and stocks have been sold off as they surge. As I wrote on Friday, „No crash – just stocks went too far, too fast, and it would be healthy to digest the gains, but those earnings, earnings, they’re still great and are driving stocks higher in the medium term.’ – We are now faced with a climb up a flight of stairs that will probably lead downhill for a while.
